Download and Media Device

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a device that a could leave connected to my tv permanently which would act as my Media Player and Download machine, as I only have a laptop and take that to work everyday.

The downloading will be mostly done via Usenets. For media I would like to use XBMC, Netflix etc. I would like if I could install some linux distro on the device.

Something like the xtreamer would have been nice but I see it's not available locally anymore.

I also don't want to spend something like R6000 for just watching media and downloading, so as cheap as possible preferably.

Any advice on devices?
 
Fortunately this is not a very demanding application, so almost any PC will do. The HP Microserver with an add-on low profile HDMI card is very popular on these forums.

Otherwise a low end PC with audio and graphics out on the motherboard would work.
 
I also would like to keep the device as small as possible.
 
Yes hp microserver looks good but the only thing that made me not buying the thing was the fact that you can't have 4tb drives in it. i phoned them and that's what they told me. i would look at something like a small 2 bay nas something like this.

We have this as-604T in the office and as far as i know you can do usenet, torrents, XBMC, and more on this device and it's very fast.

The HP N54L can use 4TB drives
 
How does the Intel NUC compare with the HP ProLiant N54L (Turion II) for R500 more but already including 4GB ram?

It all depends on what form factor you want. The NUC has minimal expansion capabilities but it's also requires a lot less power and is smaller. The Microserver has a lot of expansion options for it's small size but it uses more power and is relatively bulky.
 
Wow, lots of posts. Can I use it with Sabnzb, Sickbeard etc?

I have 4

3 of them with Raspbmc

4th with Debian, Sabnzb, Deluge, Sickbeard, Couch Potato, Headphones and MySQL(for central xbmc library)

Not that you need a dedicated one for downloading, Raspbmc has plugins for downloading etc.

Oh and activated AirPlay last night which makes it even better
