Okay so I'm about to rip my hair off real soon. My problem is that I can't seem to download any large files with the internet browser (eg 30mb+), file starts downloading and goes on till it stops with a message saying "download failed". I can't seem to get my head around why my phone does this. At times it may reach close to 95% of the download then I get the dreaded "download failed"

I'm using a 9780 on vodacom with BIS active. I'm starting to think maybe it's a bug on my OS6 (OS6.0.0.294) that could be causing it. Anyone know what the problem could be and a possible solution to it.
Also anyone with a 9780 on any network having the same problem?

Thanks in advance guys, Cheers

I had that problem with 1 of my early leaks for my OS6, .418 worked fine and then i think it was .424 that did that with almost every file could hardly even download small ones.
Have not seen the problem in any of the newer releases, check blackberryos.com for the latest OS and see if it fixes your problem, there were loads of bugs in the initial OS6 releases we saw it on the Torch, Pearl, Curve 3G and Bold, stands to reason the upgraded bold would have some of the same issues.

I know there is a file size limit when downloading using BIS.....5MB i think it is. So in order to download a larger file u need to use wap or wifi.

Not on OS 6. I've downloaded a 366MB file.

biggest file i downloaded was ubuntu 10.10 which is 699MB,plus if you getting download failed on certain file extensions go to options-device-advanced system settings-service book and look for the name Blackberry Internet Browsing Service 2,delete that and refresh your download page and download, once you done and you dont feel comfortable deleting that service book,go back there and press blackberry key and select undelete,it will put the file back there :)

Just make sure that service book Blackberry Internet Browsing Service 2 has the number 2,if it doesnt then go to the one that does, there is always 2 service names for Blackberry Internet Browsing Service

Im running OS5 on my 9700 and I download 30MB+ files daily.

Keep an eye on your signal. I noticed that while downloading if my signal drops from 3G to GPRS the download will fail, every time! It happened to me on previous versions of OS5, OS6 and even my current OS5.0.0.979.

Alternative is either to make sure you're in a good 3G coverage area when downloading or alternatively use Bolt. Using Bolt gives you the option to pause your download once your 3G signal drops. Then you scan your networks, select 3G and resume your download. The latter being a bit tedious.

I beat that, i did 990mb already and the service book is not the cause, that problem was resolved ages ago and not through an OS update, it was a network problem caused by RIM wthe provider and RIM were both sending out the default service books over the push network, unlike other devices BB does not require apporval to import service books, no matter what version of OS6 you have the service books were removed using the same push network that put them there in the first place. This problem was fixed late February, early March already.

I was deleting the SBs almost daily and all of a sudden i realised it had been over a week since my browser gave me any trouble, also the SB problem prevented browsing or downloading of any kind, it did not time out after a certain time it simply would not allow the connection out,t he download would never of started to begin with.

The failing downloads was a problem with the browser in certain versions of OS6 and then the signal can never be excluded, that can affect any version but there was a version were files simply failed to download irrespective of your signal quality.

Nice one on 990MB lol,i have only done 3.2 gigs of data in a month on BIS sigh,in regards to downloading other file types like 3gp,mp4 i found for myself that deleting that extra service book entry always solves the downloading failed for my torch,it always works for me when i receive download failed, once i finish the download i restore the service book entry,it just works for me so anyone can try it if all else fails,no harm i guess

I tried downloading the latest PartitionMagic iso with my Galaxy S (via wifi) and the message I got was the file format was not supported  . The site was distrowatch and mirror was Tenet. Browser was Opera (mini). Does BIS support iso's ? ;)

That was a single file, i only started tracking my usage likea day or 2 before that file and then the optical scroller on my 9300 gave up the ghost and has been sitting with vodacom since the 4th of this month. Although the last time i tried o****ing i had well exceeded the 1GB mark in a moonth, not sure if i can top your record yet.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Alright so I've tried a few of the suggestions given during the course of yesterday. Went to blackberry os and registered etc, was about to download then I decided to find out about warranty and stuff. From what I've read I could void my warranty by changing the os myself especially a leaked os. So I'm not too keen on that.

Then tried the SB, deleted SB2 and tried a download. Worked fine but rather slow(annoying!). Problem was it felt as if my bbm messages were being delayed by few minutes. So I undeleted the SB2. Any idea what the SB2 is used for? Are both SB's required for normal functioning of my phone? I don't want to be fixing one problem by creating another. Point to note is that the download without SB2 would not ALWAYS work, that too would fail at times but I did manage to get some done which was better than before.

Also tried vodacom, spoke to a consultant and asked to have my service books resent. Got a message on my phone about my email activation only, then I rebooted. When resending SB's is that the correct message to receive?
I'm still leaning on my OS6 being the problem but if it is I'll wait for an official release from vodacom.
Ah tis a long reply lol. Oh and damn! You guys got some great file sizes downloaded.
Thanks again guys, Cheers

for me with my torch i just have to restart my bb and service books gets replaced,no need to speak to consultant, also the speeds should be the same, mine are,i know yesterday BIS on mtn was having issues, ill test later today, but i havent got one single download fail with deleting SB 2,but thats just me,glad it worked for you though, even if it was inconsistant

Also with regards to what that service book 2 is,im not sure,i use a program on pc called magic berry, what that is is an ipd reader, ipd is the service book file extension, but i cant see what SB 2 for,it could be a service book to limit you on download size for certain file extensions therefore when deleting it works, but not all the time in your case but in mine yes

Both Service books are not required, there should always only be 1 as they tend to conflict with each other, it is quite strange that you guys still have it because RIM solved the problem months ago and i only have 1 SB on my phone.

As for your warranty, they will only void it if the software is the cause of the problem, i was running .461 leak OS6 on my curve 9300 and vodacom just swapped me for a brand new handset when i sent it in because my cursor failed which was a hardware fault. Unless the software is the direct cause of the problem your warranty will stay intact irrespective of what OS you are using.

Slight correction, ipd is teh extension for blackberry backups, these do contain the service books but depending on your level of backup can contain you emails, sms, address book and even you bbm contacts and messages along with every single setting on your handset.

You need os6 to bypass the file size limits, os5 has a limit of 5mb, a small percentage of users have reported getting larger files but not many. It could also be a simple server time out as edge is just plain slow.

Chances are simply that you are not part of the lucky few who can bypass the size limit on your os5.

I run the LATEST VODACOM APPROVED OS 6: 9780M_PBr6.0.0_rel2475_PL6.6.0.207_A6.0.0.546_Vodacom.exe

And i dont get the DL failed error anymore, i used to get it on 6.0.0.294 ALOT (most of the time). PS i download files ranging from 1MB all the way to 800MB no problem ;)

If you want a link il post it for you.
