So I appear to have a problem that makes work difficult :erm:

I can connect my 3g and browse the internet without any hassles (have tested it in 3 different locations now)

But, when I want to download any file over 5megs I am unable to  The download starts off well and fine, but eventually stops as it slows down :(

EG Download starts at 200kbps, drops to 199kbps then to 198kbps, 197kbps etc etc until hitting 0bps

Browsing/streaming does however work perfectly

This problem occurs in IE, Firefox and Chrome - so I can safely assume it's not a browser problem
This problem occurs in both Windows XP and Windows 7 - so it's not an OS/network protocol failure on my side?

Any thoughts/suggestions?

You using a download manager?

I've had to start due to similar issues, where if the connection drops or something you have to start again. End up spending 30megs to get something that's 5-6megs

I've been using Chrome/Firefox's pause download to get downloads but it's extremely frustrating

I'm in the same boat.....you start downloading a file & you can see how the download speed decline.

Really cheeses me off & I'm too hesitant to download large files with Vodacom 3G.

DownthemAll for Firefox works well with ADSL- opens multiple links to the same file being downloaded. Wonder if that will help for mobile connections?

Haven't tried it using 3G.

Have a torrent app on my phone I use at the end of the month to chow the last few megs of my bundle- that chugs along quite happily.

I'm on MTN, via SAINET- doesn't seem to be any slower than standard MTN.

So it effectively turns an HTTP direct download into a torrent?

I generally see this with the free file serving sites like rapidshare etc. I recently downloaded files from a private FTP server and hit 500kbps easy with no interruptions.

No, it downloads different portions of the same file in parallel. But not all servers support this.

Ah, well I'll give it a shot

I get this problem with everything :( Whether it's my company's VPN client or the latest VMC from the vodacom site

Does it make any difference in which area you are in? i.e. if you have a notebook go test it in a different location, might well be your tower.

I have been experiencing the same problems and its very frustrating. Once tried to download a file of 200MB and ended up using about 450MB trying to download.

:(

So it seems a few people have this... what versions of VMC are us affected people using and what modems?

I've got an Option GE0201 'Express Card', I should probably test it with a USB modem as well

Got the same problem with a Vodafone B970 router. The download starts off well & then goes down to 0 kbps. This has costed me huge, as I only have 2GB for the whole month.

Fortunately I am done with the stupid 80 MB iTunes update & 180 MB iOS updates.

Didnt have this problem last year, so not sure what is causing it.

I share your sentiments , i also download from rapidshare and also use IDM(internet download manager). I never received poor download speeds using it. There are times when the server i'm downloading from resets but it gives me the option to restart the download.

I know of a friend in the Pretoria North region who was also having similar issues. He'd start a download and the speed would gradually taper down, until there was no more throughput. He logged a call to have it resolved and he said Vodacom sent out technician to do some testing. Still need to find out if it has been resolved yet.

You mean resume?

Restarting is what OP is trying to avoid.
