My Merc is in at Steve's Auto Clinic for removal of the diesel particulate filter which became blocked. Merc wants R73k for a replacement . NOT PAYING THAT!

Any experience? What can I expect? Some say more power and better fuel efficiency. ........or is it hype?

Oh, my word! Apologies for the spelling error in the heading.

Just unblock it by burning the soot off? That's what should happen normally but it requires long distance driving for the temperature to get that high.

Merc tried to clean it twice and I did a R200km trip in sport mode giving it all hell driving in manual mode for as much as the car would let me, to no avail. It came to a point where replacement was the only option.

At worst your car will fail emissions tests.

But you may see slightly better throttle response and fuel consumption from the car due to their being a bit less restriction in things, will it be a night and day difference not likely.

If you're going to do a DPF Delete though, you may as well also get rid of any catalytic converters on your exhaust as well if they are there.

You can just ask them for a quote on removing it + an ECU remap! R73k is nuts, get another quote.
Would have thought R10k would be reasonable.

He is saying the dealership quoted R73k.

But yes, a delete and software edit to remove the DPF check will be around 10k as you said.

SAC doing the removal and ECU thing for me for R8900. Not a full remap though, but just tweaking. I am old.....do not need more power, but the car did get a bit sluggish lately. They say it is because the ECU compensated for incorrect back pressure.

Yeah do the whole kit, dfp, straight pipe, tune then everything are sorted one time.

Best thing you can do for a diesel, your neighbours will hate you...

Mainly hype,
You will have a small puff of smoke more often,

Your dpf wont get clogged again and your engine will breathe alot better..
Also remove the cat,

Hi @Pax hows your car after the removal of the DPF and ECU remap?

Any other Forumites gone down this route for DPF issues?

I had both the Merc and Duster DPF Delete and stage 1 remap on the Duster done. Both gained power, but to say they are lighter on fuel would be more guess than fact. Both cars benefitted much though from better breathing, with faster overtaking acceleration very noticeable with the Duster.

The Duster thereafter used to make a little black smoke fart when pulling away fast, exactly like diesels before the DPF era. This however does not happen with the Merc. (Duster sold in the meantime)

Thanks for the feedback.

It seems like if you in SA, or another market where the emissions systems are not mandated by law, if you have a DPF issue, and you out of motor plan, the most cost effective solution is to remove the DPF all together. The cost for these things are insane, and you will have to replace it again at some point depending on how long you keep the car.

A couple of years ago my car's EGR valve failed, and Ford quoted R32K (and no stock). A tuning place in Bloem bypassed the EGR in software and put in a blanking plate, and while they were at it, bypassed the DPF too. No effects one way or the other that I've noticed. Cost R5500.
