Searched the forum and did not come across this topic, so please excuse me if this has been done before.

I just heard on kfm as I was driving.

So sad - a great man.
Meningitis (from what I heard on the radio) has such extreme (perhaps everyday to some) symptoms, one wonders why he did not think that anything may be up.

Then again - such a hard working man, would not have let a headache or sore back and neck hold him down.

RIP Dr.Toms and thank you for all your hard work...

Ironic indeed. A lesson to all of us that we need to pay attention to details in our lives, and not think that "we know it all", or "me?...not me!".

Ivan was a good man. I met him for the first time in 1976 as a first year BA student at UCT when he was a medical student. In due course I refused to do military service for reasons of conscientious objection in 1980 and spent a year in prison as a result, and Ivan did the same a few years later.

He practiced what he preached - peace, respect, health and healing. Tragic that he died as a he lived, fighting disease. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Ivan is dead. Long live Ivan!
