Drastic ping increase when downloading, why?

1mb connection with a 1mb isp account. Line sync is perfect. Attenuation was mid 30's which is good but snr was down around 9 which is bad. Moved router from all the plugs and got that above 20 now.

Problem is that when he downloads, his pings go up to 650 or even higher? Why?

I can download at home and my ping stays rock solid but his goes to pot.

Is it related to attenuation or snr values? Or is it related to the percentage utilisation of the line?

One of you has a device with a bufferbloat problem.

Determining which device (or which subsection of a device) is causing the issue is quite challenging. Cheap consumer routers are know to be prime suspects. Try swaping those out first or playing with the QoS settings if there are any.

Depends what you're downloading. You shouldn't see a difference with http downloads. Problem comes in with torrents and news. On home uncapped accounts ISPs limit the amount of open connections you can have. Torrents specifically can open hundreds of simultaneous connections which slows down core routers. If you need to torrent and game you need a business account or try limit your open connections in your torrent client.
