Well! I’m glad about that. I have nothing against Scotch but if I order, it’s Jack Daniels (not very ‘colonial’).
I’m not sure if this is a joke in bad taste. Jack Daniels is a ‘Tennessee sipping whiskey”. Any mixer (even water) is blasphemy. For non-purists a bit of ice is acceptable.
oh ... most of the big brands have places on their local (South Africa) websites where you can join their mail lists. They'll often invite you to tastings. You can usually also arrange a free tasting if you can get more than a certain number of people to the event. the last time I did it was about 4 years ago and they needed 16 people to be there. We got about 40 people there from our office and it was a great evening. Most of the big brands will have single malts and blends as part of their list eg Jameson, Chivas and The Glenlivet are all imported and sold by Pernod-Ricard. So at a Jamesons tasting you'll get at least these 3 plus usually a few unusual ones. Signup online and you'll be in the ...erm... mix.
Both are valid. Whisky - Scottish spelling; Whiskey - Irish spelling. So, if you're drinking scotch ( I assume most do) you're actually drinking whiskey. Technically.
And don't forget the Americans - "whiskey" (probably from their Irish heritage); the Canadians - "whisky" (they don't like to be mistaken for Americans); the Japanese, Swedes, Australians, Indians and South Africa - all "whisky". So technically, we drink whisky, unless it happens to be specifically Irish or American.

I've had some very expensive whiskeys before but my personal preference is still Jamesons

i decided after reading up on whisky...**** it and just drink to enjoy it. doing that i started to taste and smell more of the wisky than having this cloud over my head of how to do it this or that way. currently enjoying my 7 year old scotch, but would like 10 or 15 years old one too

2) Add two drops of water (yes drops), taste
3) Add two ice cubes, taste
The difference is AMAZING. (You get used to drinking good whiskey neat very quickly.)

My son treated me at a very upmarket hotel in JHB for my birthday. Some tots went for R 1,800 to R 2,000 per single tot!!!
Needless to say, at those pricess you must drink it very slowly!
My drink was in the R300 range and that one lasted a very looooong time.
It was nice and I had it with ice and can still recall the taste.
Sigh so much whiskey / whisky, so little money

Needless to say, at those pricess you must drink it very slowly!

Yeah, I'm with the "have your whisky/whiskey however you're in the mood for at the time". For sipping, I'm fond of Tullamore Dew on ice. Water does seem to aid the taste, but I'd rather have the first sip or 3 as close to neat as possible, then allow the ice to melt and dilute the whiskey. I think Jameson's is over-rated and they're enjoying the fruits of timing and a successful marketing campaign. It's no better or worse than Bushmill's or Tullamore (strictly IMO!)
The missus loves the peatiness of good single malt, so she's been treated to her own stash of Laphroaig and Ardbeg. I'll enjoy a single Ardbeg, but Laphroaig's way too strong.
Around the braai or at a party, I'll take along some Grant's and get nicely toasted, mixing with either Ginger Ale or Sprite.

I think this is a great way to experiment with whisky. Some whiskies were just never meant to sipped neat
and others have such awesome flavours that get totally lost if you fill up your glass with water and ice and other stuff (I believe the man said something like "Keep it real, I'm watching you").For those sipping whiskies the few drops of water make a huge difference though. The fancy boys'll tell you the water 'opens up the whisky' but it just dilutes the alcohol enough to let you taste a bit more than just fire. This is especially useful when you're drinking cask strength whisky which might be as much as 70% alcohol:wtf:
Anyone tried any of the South African whiskies like Three Ships (about 3 products in the range), Bain's Cape Mountain whisky and Drayman's Solera? Drayman's is bringing out a 100% SA single malt whisky shortly. I think they're going to launch it at this year's Whisky Live Festival.
