My ID book was stolen 3 months ago so I applied for a new one plus a temp one. Was told that the temp one will take 15 working days. It is now 42 working days and still no ID. My license has expired since and I cannot renew it without an ID.
I still drive because I have to.
Their tracking website has never worked as advertised on the slip.
If I get fined, I will go to court and send the fine to Home Affairs.
What about my insurance?

I trust you still have a passport? That should work as proof of identity.

Except for travelling, I keep (and use) my passport for exactly this reason as well.

The passport section of Home Affairs seems to be functioning better than ID's

But my passport has been refused by various places as that they will only accepts paasports from foreigners. This includes home affairs itself when I applied for a new passport to replace an almost full one.

Apparently a passport is as good as an ID book, but getting that into the heads of clerks who are the law unto themselves is impossible.

I have a strange feeling of de ja vu, you posted this a few days back if I recall...

The web site link only works every now and then, so its worth checking out every few days or so.

Have you tried the SMS service?

Yes, Supersunbird, I did try and post this a few days ago but internet has been verrry slow and times out mostly. I thought it did not go through.
Found out that insurance still pays out even if you have the old ID book drivers.
Reasoning is that if the authorities found you capable of driving then, what makes you incapable now?

I'm sure they'll issue you with a temporary drivers license if you explain the situation.

Perhaps, but I don't want que (how the hell do you spell kew) for hours only to be told--sorry.
