I am currently usign Marconi Usb Modem using the Alcatel dynamite chipset ........Any one know where i can get some drives for it to use with Mandrake linux ...

I searched for drivers for a whole 2 weeks. I also contacted Telkom whom informed me that there is no Linux drivers currently available for the USB modem. As a result of this they actually swapped my modem for a Marconi Router, which works perfectly with Mandrake & RedHat.

Same story here
Unfortunately I have had many problems in getting various USB devices working on linux.

This is another of those. Hey I would even write a driver for linux if marconi actually supplied some real info about their devices but their info is so useless. More about setting up windows than anything else

Sorry to burst all ur bubble's but if the usb adsl modem supports pppoe its very easy to get it working under linux, just download the howto's and RTFM!!!!

Just my barbed 5c.

I have looked at the howto's. However, they all refer to modems connected via an ethernet card or hub. I have not seen anything about getting PPPoE to work under Linux with a modem connected via USB. I for one would be very pleased if you can be more specific about the howto you are referring to and where it can be found.

My understanding of the problem is that a driver is required for Linux to 'see' the USB modem so that it can be configured for use by the PPPoE client- which incidentally (afaik) you don't really need if you run a proxy that provides the shared connection.

Firtsly get a semi-newish kernel running with usb support compiled in or as modules. Not too sure which of the usb modules you will need but that shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.

Once you have that running you will see in ur /var/log/messages debug output(if you have verbose messages enabled for usb) when you plug the usb modem in and out. If not their ur the usb part is not working.

If that works fine you get all the needed utils here http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/
read their docs, and get it working.

I have not tried this myself as i dont have a usb adsl modem, but I am pretty sure it will work if you play around enought.

Just read on that site that the driver is included in the 2.4 series of kernels, so if you have 2.4.20 then you should be fine.

This driver will work for mostly all usb adsl modems that have the alcatel chipset.

Hi Balistic, those drivers only work for the Alcatel USB ( Old Telkom USB modem ), not the latest & greatest[;)] Marconi USB....or did somebody else get it working?

I can now get to the point where Linux sees my USB device and tries to connect via ADSL. However, as soon as it tries to connect, it reports that it's been disconnected. So no luck (yet). I also called Telkom to see if they would swop the USB modem for the ethernet router. They tell me that if I had asked within 14 days of my ADSL installation, they would have done it with no questions being asked. I've had ADSL for a month now, so I missed the window period. If any of you are within the 14 days period and want to swop to the router- now is the time.

From what i can remember the latest telkom marconi usb still has the alcatel chipset so the driver will still work fine.

As for the disconnect right after connect, i saw the same on freebsd with a ethernet adsl router. I have not found a solution for it yet, but i think it has todo with the pppoe driver not finding the device itself.

Vincent - don't accept that answer from telkom I had my router fully refunded after 2 months. Just make sure you speak to a manager and not on of those clowns on the desk

I am switching to a ethernet modem. HOUND them till they give in

Thanks Daredevil... but it sounds like the ethernet modem supplied by Telkom is also rather problematic. So I may just give up on them and go and privately purchase a decent router. [V]

But on the earlier discussion about installing the Speedtouch drivers for the Marconi USB modem. I've gone through the whole loop and now when I look at /var/log/messages after trying to connect, I see the message 'No speedtouch modem found'. So everything else is working, incl USB hotplugging, and even though the Marconi modem has an Alcatel chipset, it is not a speedtouch and therefore does not work.

Frew away my *** telkom ADSL modem..
Got myself a new one

A LionCom

Seems to be getting much better speeds and a more stable connection on these ADSL/Router

Err yes. Pray tell what the E in PPPoE stands for? Then tell me where you'd find that on a USB modem?

Yes. RTFM indeed...

E=Ethernet; the protocol was originally developed to allow PPP conections to be tunneled over existing fixed line connections, hence PPP over Ethernet.

Hi,

Did anyone get it working yet ? I have RH9 and I urgently need to get it up and running.

Thanks,
F

Not sure if this will help, but the Zyxel Prestige 630-11 and Hurricane 8000 also use the DynaMiTe chipset and there is an alpha (experimental) driver on Sourceforge.

SO.

It is now 1 year later and no posts in 12 months.

I take it the Sourceforge driver works!

I'll test it shortly and report back!

Marconi USB rubbish

it's a myth... the marconi modem does not work on any linux platform... I was currently attending a Novell clp certification course and the instructor aswell as a host of other Linux boffins just could not get the thing to work , about bursting bubbles... maybe find us a solution that you've tested and works before pointing out the obvious.... I think we all know the BL00DY thing is PPPOe , platforms that were tested ,Suse 10,Suse 9.3,Mandrake 2005 and Ubuntu , nothing worked . The closest you get is the dial out utility which promptly disconnects . Telkom are usless , the modem is useless even the correspondence I've had with people in the UK suggest the same problems with a similar modem over there also running on the alcatel chipset.
