Bad news for people who want to renew their driving licence cards

There is uncertainty surrounding driving licence card renewals in South Africa, as the Department of Transport (DoT) has remained tight-lipped about delays in issuing tens of thousands of cards in at least one province.

Cape Town's MMC for safety and security, JP Smith, recently revealed that the city's driving licence testing centres (DLTCs) had processed 60,000 card renewals since the start of the year.

Sounds like a money making racket to me, they will make a fortune in temporary licenses. Time for the public to sue the relevant departments, or the government itself. 30 years of gross incompetence cannot be allowed to stand.

déjà vu - feels like I already read this article a few times.

Useful info to include in the article would be the cost and implication of getting fined if you do get fined for not having a valid license in time.

I have a card on the way. I was told 6 to 8 weeks about a week ago. Lets hope it arrives
I did my renewal on 28 Feb and its still showing in production. Going on 7 weeks now and I dont expect it anytime soon.
My wife did hers in December and got her card in early Feb

So what now, will my receipt suffice if I get stopped? Why go get a temporary license if the card could be ready the next day for all I know?

Yea im in the same boat, and I refuse to pay the R70 or whatever. If my card expires before I get the new one then so be it.

so what do people do now, if they dont have a license on them?
just bribe their way out? show the receipt they have? temp license?

or use the old school ID book copy, isnt that legal?

The old ID Book is still technically legal ask @w1z4rd but there are other issues with still having it.
Show them the old card and the receipt, if they want to kick up a big stink over the "card" expiring ,which generally they don't if you're civil to them.
