Driving-offence points system by year end

At 3 points a shot for speeding, I'll burn through my points in a month. 6 weeks tops. Fully accept that this is my fault not the governments. I tend to regard the speed limit as a minimum. And yes, I pay all my fines monthly.

Ahh well. I'm sure that you will be able to buy "top up" points from a vendor near you.

Yeah, and unfortunately, once you have all your points and license revoked, how would you get to work? The reason there are so many cars on the road is because we don't have an alternative - if you dont have a car, you are pretty much screwed. I wonder if the bright sparks thought of the economic impact this will have on SA.

Why dont they invest into getting a decent public transport system going 1st? If we had a decent public transport system, more people will choose to leave their cars at home if they went out for the night and thus they will be avoiding many drunk driving incidents.

I recon this is a money making scheme. You're right - you'll probably be able to "buy" points back if you dont have any left.

Dude, I very seldom get traffic fines. I think in the past 2 years I've managed to accumulate 2 (maybe 3) speeding fines. I am just saying that the whole country's economy will be affected if people cannot get to work, not just the guys speeding. What will we do if 20% of the workforce cannot get to work. Ja, sure, it will hurt the guy with the revoked license most. He will not be able to get to work to earn lets say his R200/h. But, with him not being there, his company might loose out on say the R500/h they charge him out at. This is obviously even worse if the person in question is a consultant/sales person that needs to travel.

I do agree with the points system. It is a good thing to introduce, BUT, give people an alternative. If you dig speeding, then prepare to have your license revoked - but, at least bring a system into place whereby those people can still get to work.
 
Sure, I wasn't sure what your opinion of the points system was, which is why I added the GougedEye bits.

A lot of people in this thread seem to be blaming the points system and think they're going to be targeted.

No sympathy from me, if you speed it's nobody's fault but your own.

(I agree that we need better public transport - I just don't think that looking after people who've had their license revoked should be the motivation for it.)

It should have little impact on SA's economy if people stay on the right side of the traffic laws.
 
All you guys bitching about this system and how it will affect the economy and how proud you are of all the fines you get.... Damn have you not for one minute actually sat back and thought that perhaps a solution would be for you to just drive below the speed limit.

You are the same guys that will bitch about criminals... well sorry to inform you but you yourselves are breaking laws! You may not like the laws but you'd find that a pedophile also does not like the consensual age for sex being 16!
 
I actually think this is a good idea. We often see road rage, speeding, wrecklessness(somtimes all in one day) on our roads. A large number of SA drivers generally disregard the rules of the road and I think this is step in the right direction.

WTF does a public transport system have anything to with you keeping from speeding or breaking any other traffic violation.

Yes, but thats just crazy talk man. Thankfully I usually come to my senses very quickly on those horrible occasions. If they want me to toddle around at 60 with the old age pensioners, why did they put a turbo in my car?

Funny, last time I checked you don't get a criminal record for speeding. Can't really be the same thing as paedophilia then can it? And if you think it is, you need to reassess your values in life.

Remember, Speed Kills!! Thats why they tax it so much. Driving Drunk, Driving through robots, driving through stop streets, unroadworthy vehicles etc don't kill however. Thats why they hardly tax it at all. Nothing to do with how much tax they can bring in with the least effort. Honest.

As for the "effect on the economy argument" - pffft. Less effect than 350 deaths over a long weekend.
 
Got more questions.

Will the "love letters" that get mailled stop?

In other words, if I drive my friend's car, get caught on the highway by radar, does my friend get points deducted? Does he now have to go and prove that it wasn't him driving the car? And then the other part: How does he prove it wasn't him driving?

Sounds like a great way to get someone...:D:D
 
How about dishing out speeding fines proportional to the offender's income and give taxi drivers extra points for bad driving.
In some Scandinavian countries speeding tickets are proportional to income.

E.g. Finland
Do not speed if you the heir of a family-owned sausage empire. :D
Finn's speed fine is a bit rich

Low income proportional fine = no money to buy petrol = no crappy car on the road = no more speeding by crappy cars

High income proportional fine = no money to pay bond on house/snazzy car = sell fast going car/house = less yuppy schmucks speeding over 200km/h


Well in a perfect world that would make sense, but this is Africa... "Excuse me bossa, you were speeding, nice car, what is your income...let's strike a deal"
