Hi All,
I'll need to drive from CPT to Oudtshoorn on 1 Jan, and just wanted to know how are the roads - busy/empty, dangerous/safe (compare to other days)? If you have had similar experience, please share!

Thx!

With the world ending in a few days I imagine the roads would probably be broken up with massive sinkholes through which lava will sporadically spew.

Roads are usually quiet on the 1st and 2nd, from personal experience. Will also be on the road on the 2nd but only for a 400km odd trip.

i would expect them to be quiet due to hangovers and the next work day is only on a monday (1 jan is a friday) .

I remember I went out cycling on 1 January last year, and I felt like Will Smith in the movie "I am Legend"! I literally saw no human being on the road between 05:30 - 07:30 that morning. That was fun to be out cycling.

You can always take the R62.Mostly quiet in my experience and we go to Oudtshoorn often.

In the past I've especially chosen to drive on days like the 25th Dec. & 1st Jan. due to them being much quieter. You should notice how much more relaxed the trip is, compared to other days of the year.

Impossibly to know how dangerous or safe a road will be when travelling on it - even though there are less cars on roads, on these days, you still need to be vigilant at all times.

i would imagine it would be dangerous on the 1st. idiots with hangovers on the road...

Thank you all for your answers! I'm, indeed, going to take R62, my only real concern is the amount of (still) drunk ppl on the road.
Re: Alf101 - Barrydale stop is obvious, but Rony's Sex Shop is way more cool :)

my only real concern is the amount of (still) drunk ppl on the road.

They usually start surfacing & taking to the roads again from about 11am on public holidays, so until then you should be fine.

I just drove EL-CT on the N2 and back. Was fine. WC roads are great but the area from Kysna to Mossel Bay is very slow going. Theyve urbanized that area of the N2. Lots of cameras. Lots of cops, lots of road blocks.

EC roads on that side should be fine as well.
