driving with headphones in

Hi all,

I wanted to ask,

how dangerous is it to drive/operate machinery with earphones in?
I begin to see it often, and wanted to ask, does anybody here do it?
can you keeping situational awareness while driving this way?

I mean I never see pilots doing it, but yet lots of people do it while driving.
 
I wouldn't - but then again it's not too much different from driving with music blasting....

It is though - the headphones block out outside sounds more effectively than just blasting loud music.
 
People are farkin morons though.
I don't get why they jog in the early hours of the morning or at night - or anytime really - wearing headphones.
A large part of your situational awareness comes from being able to hear what's going on around you.
Just ask a person who's going deaf, like me.

Think it depends a lot on the type of headphones you're using. You don't want to isolate yourself.

I personally would never do it but if the headphones let outside noise in then it's not much different from having the music coming from the car speakers.

Has the radio in your car packed up too?
 
Personally I think driving with ear/head-phones in is stupid. But then again some people just blast the radio at high volume.
 
You do get earphones made to let in ambient noise, they are specifically made for cycling etc to hear traffic.
 
its fsuckn stupid. i see people driving with hoodies on is also a thing now. doesn't that cut off your vision as well?
 
I've created a thread about this a couple of years ago, search for it OP. I recall in that thread quite a few guys thought it was acceptable, whether the wider view on that stance changed or not I'm not sure, or maybe those members haven't seen this thread yet.

no working fine, just noticing people who drive with headphones in dont react to things around them,

nearly saw a taxi sideswipe a woman in a polo who was on her headphones,

thought its a very dangerous thing to do, but who knows maybe some here do it quite safely.
 
What about totally deaf drivers? What sort of aids do they require/utilise?

I'll be honest, I've driven with headphones before, and can still make out hooters and whatnot. Didn't feel particularly impaired.

Also now with my bike, I don't hear all that much with some speed and earplugs in - I just make sure I am as visually aware and careful as I possibly can be.
 
when I ride, I use ear plugs to cancel out road noise and engine noise on my bike.
this is inside my helmet.

I then also use bone conducting headphones to listen to music and make calls. though I do not often make calls.

I would not say my situational awareness is all there, but it is definitely still present, I take more care to look around. and I can still hear sirens and hooting cars.

but people listening to music on headphones in a car is less dangerous then people chatting on whatscrap while driving, so I suppose its fine. but people will still chat and drive because as has been stated in this thread, people are morons.
