DroidTab

If I wanted a cheap tablet badly I'd go for the Archos 101. It's pretty crappy as well but has some decent hardware inside and a capacitive multi-touch screen.

There is the Droidtab 10 which has a better processor and 512 RAM and a 10" screen for R200 more

Who makes these? Some Chinese manufacturer? No 3G is a deal-breaker for me. Il just keep using my DHD. Its more powerful than all of these...lol

DroidTab Response

Has anybody used a DroidTab? http://www.iloveandroid.co.za/ seems to be selling variations of it quite cheaply. Although tempted, I'm put off by 256MB RAM on a tablet and a resistive screen.

Hi mofyah,

We have noted your concerns with regards to the size of the RAM on the 7" DroidTab.
Android 2.2 Froyo is a very fast, compact OS, running applications of average size of a few hundred kilobytes. It is designed as an internet tablet, and as such the 256MB RAM is more than sufficient for 80% of applications being used, and all web, mail and social activities.

Please see below for the pro's and con's on Resistive and Capacitive Touch Screens.
The question is not "which one is better?", but rather, "how am I going to be using the tablet / or in what environment?", as both have different favourable characteristics.

Please contact us if we can be of more help.

Capacitive touch screen:

Pros:

1) Multi touch support available
2) Visibility good even in sunlight
3) Highly sensitive to finger touch leading to ease of use
4) Not prone to dust particles
5) Glossy look and feel

Cons:

1) Need to have atleast 5% humidity to achieve capacitive effect
2) More expensive than Resistive touch screen
3) Doesn't work with inanimate objects/fingernails/gloved fingers
4) Latest technology, may need to evolve a bit more!

Resistive touch screen:

Pros:

Relatively cheaper
1) Can operate with any pointing devices like stylus, pen, nail etc
2) Can operate at any level of humidity
3) Ease of use, as it could be used even with your winter gloves on!
4) Very useful for people using handwriting recongition system, due to ease of use with a stylus!
5) More accurate than capacitive touch screen!
6) Old technology and hence more reliable!

Cons:
1) Highly sensitive. As it can operate with almost any sort of pointing devices, can be more vulnerable with dust particles!
2) Poor visibility in sunlight, mostly due to multiple layers reflecting light!
3) Screen, being sensitive at the upper layer, can be more vulnerable to scratches!

Hi RandomGRK,

Yes, The DroidTab's are manufactured in China.
If you are looking for 3G connectivity, we have a MiFi unit, that uses your sim card from your data dongle, and converts it into a WiFi Hotspot for multiple devices.

What's "crappy" about the archos 101?

See the review:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/24/archos-70-and-101-internet-tablet-review/

Basically very low build quality. You get what you pay for.

Yeah saw that... Was keen on an archos 70. Considering the galaxy pad now. (It's 450 pounds vs 250 for the archos 250gb at amazon).
Galaxy has better build quality, better "tabletified" android, better screen and 3g. 250gb would be nice but I'm not convinced putting a hard drive (non SSD) in a tablet is a good idea.

This (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2375016,00.asp) is unfortunate though.

Ah cool :)

Cos the stuff in the video seems doable with apps etc on 2.2 even. Hopefully galaxy can be upgraded...
