Drop in demand for IT professionals

3. One had used test-driven development overseas. Not one was familiar with continuous integration.
4. An astounding not one was required to use version control in their current positions, though some did use VSS.

Frighting the sort of places too. I've actually noticed quite a fair market opportunity to just dump my products and go around consulting on TDD and CIT. Have already done so for a few places.

More frighting? All my years in varsity they've never once so much as spoken about TDD or CIT.

IT does mean techie. IT Professional means developer.

Well ya the problem is that you get everyone and their uncle calling themselves an "IT Consultant". I remember an episode of the weakest link where a guy introduced himself as one, when questioned on it he said "I work in a call centre". lozl

There has definitely been a drop in IT jobs on the ground where I work. I work for a major SA bank and a little while back our big boss told us that we where cutting back from 35 contractors on our floor to perhaps 2. The culling has not gotten all the way but we did get rid of about 20 or so consultants/contractors. Coupled with that I have seen some mates of mine heading back home from places like Ireland, England, Oz, etc. Also remember that this is banking so they generally only hire degreed people. Most of the IT professionals I work with have at least a BSc IT and more often are fully qualified engineers.

It is easier to fill an IT job now than ever before from what I have seen. I chatted to a friend of mine in HR the other day and he said after September 08 they went from advertising 110 jobs to about 19 in about a month after the hiring freeze was put in place. He said he can now get the skills he wants but getting AA candidates is still obviously hard as they are the last guys to be let go of.

I'm suddenly glad that the bank bought me out from the consulting company I used to work at. I was peeved at the time at the casual handover but in retrospect its great to have a permanent position rather than having to renew 6 month contracts constantly.
