I just want to ask the other people on here with Netgear DG834GT Routers to please comment. I experienced a lot of ASDL drop outs this afternoon and then logged a call with Telkom in frustration. Still haven't received a call back on the fault that I logged. I eventually gave up and switched everything off and dropped someone off at the airport.

Came back now switched everything on from scratch and now everything seems to run better than it did before. Definitely getting better speed than the 192K I am supposed to.

Is this a router problem or could this be Telkom?

I have seen though that the router sometimes displays the message LCP Down? That is normally when I can't get it up at all without rebooting the router and only then it stays up for a minute or 2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have also done all the Firmware upgrades that is available on Netgear's site. I am back to the original firmware now.

My GT worked just fine all afternoon.

ADSL firmware V1.01.28 (ADSL rev A2pB018b.d15h)

I have a NetGear DG834G, have yet to have a drop in the 4 months Ive had ADSL.

The DG834G is totally different from the DG834GT.

nah this thing drops connections again almost every 3 minutes

Are you using the wireless access point ???.
Try disabling XR mode and make it G mode and fix to channel 11.

Did you try the same firmware as what I have loaded ???.

Thanks Tibby for replying. I have the Wireless Access Point off at the moment and I am running version v1.01.20. I have tried version 28 as well but then it seemed to be worse. The connection has now been up again for more than 30 minutes.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 320 kbps 192 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.5 db 22.5 db
Noise Margin 30.2 db 14.0 db

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoE 17215 14958 0 1614 4487 00:30:43

I am starting to wonder whether this is a bad line by any chance. Although the techie said that the line was actually "good quality" when he tested ADSL. He's test was only about 5 minutes with his USB Modem.

Firstly your connection speed is rather odd as modems on all the packages are supposed to sync all at 640/384 ???.

Also your downstream attenuation is rather high (mine is 25.5db) , this measures your distance from the exchange and usually determines what speed you can have and in your case you can't go faster than 1Mbps.

I suggest getting your port tested at the exchange.

I have noticed nothing but solid stability ;-) Using firmware V1.01.28. I'm in Newlands, Cape Town.

Shout if you want me to do any tests on my router.

Cheers, Nick

Nick you also using the DG834GT?

I have had some more mixed and better results now with this router. It has been up today for 3 hours and then again another 1hour30 minute spell. THat is without the wireless enabled. Also still running V1.01.20. When it drops now again I will push the firmware up again. I have gathered so many version not a problem :) I have to say that when the line is up it is really going ok for a 192K. I am getting downloads at 30kb/s at certain periods.

Nick do you think Telkom should check this line out?

Tibby just an interesting note I have mine standing vertically now and it doesn't seem to get so hot and thus seems to not drop the connections that often. I don't know whether it is a run of luck or whether this is actually something that is helping me. Currently I can't compare as this is a new ADSL installation that was done on Friday evening. Could be Telkom as well.

Best way to check before calling Telkom is to test with another router, well assuming you know someone else with ADSL who will lend you their router ;)

Well ever since yesterday night this damm thing keeps loosing it's WAN connection.

Up for a few hours then down again ... wondering if Telkom is working on stuff.

Hmmm...

I also have my DG834GT standing vertically. I have wireless turned on as well.

Definately get your line tested with another router, as I don't think the netgear is to blame (unless you got a dud one!). If you get crappy results with another router, give hellkom a call.

You shouldn't really be getting any drops... I don't.

Cheers, Nick

Telkom tested line for an hour and no problems, but are keeping the call open. I am gonna try and borrow another router. So we will see. Finally enough though I can only bring the line up again by rebooting the router. This doesn't seem totally normal?

It keeps on losing the WAN connection and then says LCP down. I am on 192K wonder if that has something to do with it.

Rebooting the router ain't normal but my GT seems to be behaving itself tonight after yesterday's shenanigans but I flipped it vertical as well just in case.

Up for 12 hours now without a resync.

I notice that you are in C.T (which area btw) ... want to try out my DG834 (no wireless though) ???.

It uses a totally different chipset to the DG834GT so it "could" give you different result ???.

Thanks for the offer tibby.dude

I got a different router from someone I know. D-link 504T. I have to say this thing is rock solid. Or at least it seems like it. This one stayed up for 6 hours then I disconnected which was much better than the netgear's record of 3 hours 35 minutes. Also line speed test give better results and the line attenuation seems to be lower.

I am going to run this D-link 504t the weekend still to check and then I will probably have to send the netgear back seeing it is only month old.
