DS lite owners

that's more like moving backwards. the ds lite has outsold the psp everywhere except here.

I think Sony MAY have learnt their lesson when it comes to handhelds. Don't think they will be bringing out another handheld again. WHat would be the point anyways...a more powerful handheld...PSP2, ala Sony's more is better philosophy. The DS isnt even nealry as powerful as the PSP yet it outsold the Greystation portable. People need to realise that Nintendo runs things in the handheld market....

Hey dis,

what's the scene like - I'm really tempted to get a DS lite but unsure of who I'd actually get to play with. Also, is the online service any good. Have you got the opera browser. What games you playing. I'd like to get on but I still need a little convincing.

without wifi internet at home, it helps having friends with their own DS lites. i play against my wife from the next room without any need for a wifi internet connection. our fav is Super Mario DS :)

the opera browser is pure magic :)

the homebrew scene is great as well. once you've bought a (Slot 1 - DS game cartridge sized) Supercard, M3Simply or R4 you can load apps onto your micro sd card to run. my 1gig micro sd cost R350 on bidorbuy. a supplier that ships the M3Simply to SA is www.flashlinker-shop.com. you will not pay VAT so it comes to 49.58EUR + 8.05EUR for shipping

No need to flash or hack anything!

besides playing your backed up DS Roms, there's a ton of apps to work and play with. here's a partial list:

SylphIRC. A DS IRC Client
DS Linux. A Linux port running on the DS - with the built in WiFi it becomes fully networked. great as an SSH client.
DS DrumMachine - A TR909 and TR808 emulator for the DS.
DS Organize - A palm pilot clone app.
DSVNC - A VNC client
Moonshell Media player for MP3s, videos etc..
Nitrotracker - an xm tracker for the DS - you can even record from the built in Microphone.

here's a good wiki:

Any reason to choose a particular one?

I was waiting for the pink ones so I could get a DS lite for my girlfriend.

the Supercard, M3Simply and R4 are all basically the same with slight differences in their UI.

Thanks discourse, I think that's convincing enough, just give me a month to get the shreds of my wallet together post the Christmas madness and I'll be up and running.

via NINTY:

It’s a gimmick! It’s a fad! It’s a silly toy! It’ll never stand up against the might of the vastly more powerful PSP! Who wants to play games on a touch-screen anyway? What developer is going to use the second screen for anything other than a stupid map or something?

It’s been a while since you heard any of those diatribes, hasn’t it? That’s because in the last two years, the Nintendo DS has proved over and over again that its detractors were full of hot air. Sales of the console itself are impressive - sales of software are absolutely stunning, even more so when you consider the success of many third-party titles on the system. Top-notch third party games on a Nintendo platform? Good lord.

That said, many of the games on our list for the year are Nintendo-published titles - but as with the Wii list last week, it’s important to point out that this is probably a list you’ll point and laugh at in 12 months time. This year’s big DS titles will undoubtedly come out of left field and surprise us all, just as they have done in the past. That’s what makes the handheld console so exciting.
