"The DSG was developed by BorgWarner (same company that makes the Haldex and VAQ diffs), the PDK was developed by Porsche decades before the DSG came out. Currently the PDK is made by ZF Friedrichshafen, it shares zeros parts with the BorgWarner unit.
The setups are similar now though; they both use twin shaft, twin clutch, wet clutch systems."
"They share quite a few similarities. Obviously, both are dual, wet clutch gearboxes and both use the same inner/outer input shaft idea. The input shaft has a solid inner and hollow outer portion, which creates the inner and output input shafts. Each shaft controls the corresponding gears, so for example when you have 1st gear engaged via the inner shaft, it already has 2nd gear engaged via the outer shaft, anticipating (in the calibration) which gear should be demanded for use next. When it's time to switch gears, it's just a matter of disengaging K1 (inner input shaft clutch plates) clutches and engaging the K2 (outer input shaft clutch plates). The moment you engage 2nd, the TCU is preparing for the next move and, depending on the software calibration and your many inputs as a driver, it will prepare the next logical gear that will be needed to continue with smooth fluent operation."
