Just moved to a new house, ISGS free, I'd like to get an ADSL line put in as 3G is to risky for "always-on".

What the steps? Just goto the Telkom site and order a line?

phone or go to one of the shops rather .... quicker than the site method.

thats your best bet ...... the only thing that sucks is if you have no line, it might be a bit of a wait, depending on your area of course.

that helps ........ just depends on if there's numbers available and how long the waiting list for them is :o

Best bet would be to phone, the sooner you do it the sooner you'll have your line.

With Telkom things need to planned well in advance.

*GH ageing.

Got my girlfriend to do it while I'm away,

This is what the Hellkom store told her:
Telkom line details :: monthly rental = R125.00
ADSL Rental = R199.00 (if we use telkom as SP (1gig/month))
ADSL if telkom not SP = R152.00 per month

Are these all the costs associated with getting ADSL? Besdes the ADSL data bundle costs.

don't forget that they will most likely charge you an 'installation' fee for the line and then if you don't go the self install route, charge you another 'installation' fee.

ADSL line rental for the 384 line is R152 a month. If you want 1gb bandwidth with that, you only pay R199 which includes the line and the 1gb bandwidth, which is a nice deal. If you only want their line because you want, say, WebAfrica as your ISP, then you only pay for the line which is R152, and you will pay WebAfrica whatever for your bandwidth.

I would go into a telkom shop rather , phoning could take hours/days/weeks

What they charge for that?

Yeh... might I'll work out if the 1GB is worth it depending on what other bundles are available.

the line installation I think is R300 odd and then the ADSL installation is R400 odd ... but just do a self install on the ADSL and save the cash :D

Last time I checked, it was R437 odd for installation. I did the self-install. It's easy; I saved R437 and I got a free router. I don't think they still have this promotion though, but I speak under correction. I'd advise you to get a 3gb cap.

Wait - hows the self install work?

Shouldn't be difficult considering i started in networking... although I never want to see a Coax, STP or UTP cable again...

5 minutes. Easy peasy. Just connect the phone cable to the router and the router to the pc. You may need a phone cable extension, depending on how far the router is from the phone. Also just install the microfilter into the little phone box where the cable is(don't know what it's called). They include the instruction manuals so you can't go wrong.

you just phone them and tell them you want to do ADSL self install, they let you know when to go ahead and set up your modem and wham, thats it ..... you have a 7day window in which to do the setup after they have informed you. It's usually quicker too ... I only waited 2 days :D

You can always go to an ISP with a Complete Package like the WA one. Then its Telkom normal phone line rental = R152 plus WA complete package @ R200 which includes the adsl rental + 1g + router. I don't think there were any initial charges....and I think the first 6 months on WA are less than R200...forgot how much.
