Hi guys
My DSL has been down for the past 48hrs and died after that hectic storm we had a few days ago. My router still seemes fine as the LAN is still going however my DSL is not synching at all, not even reading line attenutation etc, it always says my DSL is in a state of ACTIVATION.

Anyway i phoned telkom filed a fault and they said that DSL is down and they would send a tech. Phoned again yesterday and the lady said they were working on the problem "as we speak", called them again today and i was told that the exchange is down. I honestly have no clue whats wrong, is it my line or the exchange i cant seem to get a straight answer!!

I live in Hurlingham Manor which is a 5min drive from Sandton so i presume i connect to that excahnge, is anyone else in the area experiencing problems?

thanks

A friend of mine lives in Morningside Manor and is fine. I'm sure telkom will have your line up soon if it's the whole DSLAM (what your modem syncs with). My DSLAM was nailed by lightning in the storm two days ago, and telkom had it replaced the next morning.

I hope so cause im in dire need of sending through some emails to clients and making some online payments etc. DSLAM must be down because like you said i have 0 synch, infact the router doesnt pick DSL at all. Is the DSLAM in those telkom boxes you see on the side of roads etc? Im thinking of taking a sticking a piece of papper on it saying "FIX MY DSL PLZ!!!!" lol.
If i dont see anything by tomorrow afternoon il call them again and complain

DSL is still down!
Phoned them again and got the usual "techs are working on the problem"
They have been working on the problem for 4 days and nothing.

Have you logged a fault, though? Have they given you a reference number? Its important that you have a reference number for the fault so that you can see when they apparently have it resolved, and then you can verify

My bro did log a fault so il ask him for the reference number and give them a call again. There is always a telkom van in my area so if i see a guy il even ask him to quickly check my line

Quick update.

Phoned again and spoke to a tech named Julian who knew what was going on.
He ran a few tests on my line and tried to reset it with no results on myside. A tech was assigned to my case but due to the backlog il have to wait.Im just curious if im the only person affected in my area.

Iv also been eyeing my router wondering if its also at fault here.
Since my house was struck by lightning im wondering if the RJ11 port on
my router has not died. The LAN functions on the router are still working 100%
I took my router back quickly to where i purchased it but apparently its too much of mission to connect a phone line into a router and see if it sync's.
going to test it out at my friends place later this eve.

Do you guys think its possible for just the RJ11 port on the router to be dead with out it effecting any other functions?

This is what my current DSL status is. It always stays in a state of activation.

Ok guys seems my router was at fault
Ended up buying a D-link DSL-2640U router and holy cow what a mission it was to setup. Still cant get PPPOE working but bridged mode is working so long.
Whats bugging me now is that my once lovely 4mbit is now 2mbit!!!
WTF!

WTF!

I stay in Morningside Manor/Rivonia and the afternoon storm this past Tuesday fried my netgear wireless DSL router and my entire motherboard/cpu/ram, through the ethernet port.

Neighbours house was struck and it shattered their garage door in 2 pieces like a snapped matchstick. Must have come up the phone lines after that.

Insurance has replaced what I needed but line is totally dead.

Logged a call Wednesday morning and am still "waiting for a technician to be assigned" to the call reference log. Using patchy 3G connection in the meantime. Sigh.

Anybody got the number of a telkom technician in the Rivonia area that's helped out lately ? There's wishful thinking. lol.

4 Days and counting ... really quick response telkom. Not.

I feel your pain but atleast 3G is better that nothing. Im going to call support soon and ask why my dsl went from 8 months of 4mbit to 2mbit with just a change of a router?

Another update
Called Telkom and asked them about my speed. They said techs are busy working and i should be put back to a higher profile speed "soon"
Any one know some techs who can just crank me up back to 4mbit im sick of waiting 30min in queue for a call

Well never discount the power of posting on this BB !

Super efficient and friendly technician by the name of Johan phoned at 8am this morning and was at our house at 8:45am.

Took one look at the DSL/phone box, opened it up and showed me the burnt circuit board inside. One of the chips had actually been blown off the board PCB and was clearly charred and burnt, and cracked in 2.

His exact words were "That must have been a #$%#$ huge surge on the line".

10 minutes later, new box and splitter installed and my DSL is back at 4096 speeds and better than ever.

Big ups to Johan and the call centre girl who escalated the fault report!

Thats what i like to hear :)
Im still trodding along on 2mbit :( come back to me 4096!!!!

Great to hear. Maybe send his superiors a letter of compliment?
I always do for good work.
Glad to hear it is sorted.

+1 that's what I'd like to do.

Any idea how to get in contact / through to a "superior" ?

Usually you will get a phone call from the quality department and they will ask how the service was etc, so best you inform them.
Guys can speeds be adjusted remotely? This 2mbit is killing me
