DSL drops when phone rings.... Why?

How is the router connected?

How is the Fax modem connected?

From my telkom wall jack one port is for the telephone and fax, and the other one for my router. Instead of my filter being at my phone it is now at the the wall jack leading to my phone.

5+ phones filtered separately is known to cause problems with ADSL.

Now when I think about it, the problem of cutting off was when I had a filter for every phone.

Rather try

TELKOM -> FILTER -> LINE -> PHONE/FAX

or if you have more than 1 phone/fax

TELKOM -> FILTER -> SPLITTER -> LINE(S) -> PHONE(S)/FAX

James dude you're wasting a lot of people's time here :)

I just noticed another post by you some time ago:

With an attenuation of 64 you are definitely going to experience synch losses, ADSL is not meant to work above 60. So forget filters and all that crap, just be happy you have ADSL at all!

If I were you I'd have a second phone line installed just for telephones and keep the ADSL on its own line, should help with stability. Also check that your router firmware is its latest version, sometimes helps with attenuation and SNR a bit.

Hehe, crazy guy - 64dB !!

Sorry to revive an old thread but i'm having the same problems.

But i just noticed when my fax machine receives a fax, ADSL also loses sync for a minute...

Also have stability problems with my connection, but fax machine has been uplugged for a few days and haven't had one problem?

I think it's down to my Attenuation = 57.0 and too many filters? I'm stil sycning at 4096 kb/s though and since 3 years or so. Only been unstable since last year or so...Always been fine before that. I refuse to get synced to a lower speed profile..

I have 4 filters on seperate phones.

Mabye get a splitter for the fax and phone in the office and run them off one filter?

I suspect the filters are drawing too much "signal" or whatever so maybe one less will help with stability.

Had the same problem, phoned telkom (they were there in a few hours), wasn't the filter but where I placed the filter. (NO, there wasn't a filter between telkom and the router):p

Don't understand that, instead of the filter between the line and the phone

TELKOM -> LINE -> FILTER -> PHONE
TELKOM -> LINE -> ROUTER -> PC
(there was no and still is no filter between telkom and the router)

he changed the filter to the following

TELKOM -> FILTER -> LINE -> PHONE

WEIRD, it still looks the same to me...

BUT IT WORKED, no more cut offs!

Hope it helps

I must try this, hope it sorts me out cos telkom cant tell me wtf is causing my line to drop. Mayb its this :P

I'm also having this problem a lot..

I have the Telkom line with the 2 ports in the wall, One runs to the lightning protection, the other passes through the filter and into the modem..

Could someone please explain how to do this whole TELKOM -> FILTER -> LINE -> PHONE thing, rather clueless about it

Just means connect the filter straight to the telephone box on the wall first, then connect the phone cable to the filter and run it to your phone.

NOT phone line connected to box on wall, then connected to the filter connected directly to the phone.

If that makes sense..

Basically the filter must be connected to the wall and not directly to the phone.
