Hi guys.

So about a month and a half ago I had my line installed. It's a 6mb line and it worked perfectly up until last week Wednesday.

Ever since Wednesday my line will sync fine. It would even connect to my ISP, albeit taking a bit longer. This is the strange part, I can't do anything. I can't browse, I can't connect any applications. I could ping websites and even do tracert, and got quite poor results from it. On Wednesday night at 10 it started working again, but only for 2 hours. After that the packet loss started, and it stopped working completely at 12-ish.

Now since then it's gotten progressively worse. First I couldn't even ping websites anymore. Now I can't even connect to the ISP, even though my line syncs fine.

Now I've had 3 techies come out. The first two only tested it from the exchange, and basically closed the fault saying it's been resolved and the line is free from any defects. The third one actually came to my house, and tested it with his router and computer as well. He couldn't even sync. He called me later and said I should try and see if I can connect. And he'll call me again later to find out if it's working. He never did. He seemed pretty shocked that it would sync and connect to the ISP, but not receive or send any date.

So do you guys have any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks in advance

Your your post your ADSL line stats? eg. line attenuation, SNR/noise margins, line speed, mode/modulation (if you can find it)?

Secondly, if your ISP account is connected, run the following in command prompt and post the results here, unless it cannot even get like past hop 3:
tracert -d 8.8.8.8

I've had a case where my ADSL line was fine, but none of my ISP accounts would connect, which ended up being a Telkom fault ofc.

Hi Pada.

Here are the stats (luckily D-link has everything on one page) :

Ever since the techie was here and went to the exchange, none of ISP accounts will connect.

Your stats look OK. I typically suggest that people should downgrade their ADSL line speeds until their SNR margins are above 10dB, and yours are already above it and the modem is showing no errors.
It looks pretty similar to my D-Link DSL-2500U at the church, except that mine is showing a value under "Data Cells":

Try setting your ADSL modem to G.Dmt enabled only, which should be found under Advanced Setup -> DSL. It would require a restart of the modem and then the Mode on the stats page should change from ADSL2+ to G.DMT.

If that doesn't make any difference to your ISP connectivity, try phoning Telkom at 10210 and ask them to downgrade your ADSL line speed to 4Mbps. I'm not sure if this will change anything at all, but it may just do something.

Next time ask them to put you on a different card in the exchange since it may be faulty and your pots filters are working fine right?

@Pada, I've tested it with 2 different routers. I changed the modulation on both of them and it hasn't made a difference.

When this initially started I had them lower the speed to 5mbps. It made no difference at all. The first technie told me that 6mb should be fine, since it's been working fine for month. When the line was installed it was on 8mb. It had a few sync issues, and after lowering it to 6mb it worked perfectly up until a week ago.

Pada, I'm quite sure the problem is not on my side. I mean, even the techie tested it with his router and laptop, and it still didn't work.

@Ichigo, I'll try that. I never used a POTS filter, since I never used a phone on the line. I've only started using a POTS filter after this started, since I need to call telkom so much...

The POTS filter is only needed when you install a phone/alarm/fax machine.

Like I don't use a POTS filter for my ADSL modem at all, however, my telephone goes through a POTS filter - and my ADSL has never disconnected/malfunctioned during a phone call.

Oh.

Either way, I can plug my router directly into the wall without the splitter, and it's going to do the exact same thing it's doing now. Once this is fixed, I won't need the phone in any case.

Do you think this might be related to all the line upgrades taking place?

Hi There Masquearde,
Given you have tried different routers and got the same results and done the same with the POTS filters it would point to the problem being with Telkom.
It may have something to do with the upgrades but if you do nothing the problem is not going to go away when the upgrades are completed.
I would suggest another call to the technicians are needed and you may need to have them come out to you to show them the connectivity issues.

Regards

Tim
