Hi all,

So I have been having some issues with my Telkom DSL line for over 2 months now.
I moved houses, was finally able to get ADSL again, applied for a telephone line, then got a 4Mbit ADSL line.

Everything was 100% for about 3 weeks, then I came home one day and started browsing and noticed I kept getting disconnected. Checked and it was my line which kept on dropping. Happened a few times (maybe 5?) within an hours or so and ever since then I keep getting random disconnects and it feels like it is getting worse and worse. I have upgraded to a 10Mbit and then 20Mbit VDSL since and my stats remained good.

There was no Telkom infrastructure in the property I am staying in so Telkom had to run a brand new cable from their Telkom pole which is literally on the corner of our property to our house and into my room for the telephone / ADSL line. The Telkom technician also stated that our exchange is pretty new (it supports 40Mbit VDSL, I was temporarily on that profile on Monday night as well).

So every day the line will drop multiple times (it feels as if it is getting worse and worse, dropping more frequently as times goes by). Although at times the line will be perfectly stable for 8 to 10 hours. What I have noticed is that often the line will drop quite a few times within a certain time period and then be stable for quite a while afterwards.

ie. Drop say 6 times in an hour and then be stable for 6 hours or more. The times it drops are completely random. I have tried 4 different routers within the past few weeks, the one Telkom tech even gave me a brand new sealed Telkom D-Link 2750U and I recently got a brand new Billion 8800NXL and with all 4 of the routers I have used I still have the same issues.

On 10Mbit my SNR was around 24dB for downstream, it was over 30dB when I was on 4Mbit and with my 20Mbit VDSL it is around 20dB.
My attenuation is 15dB or so - my copper run is 1.1KM from my house to the exchange.

I have had multiple port resets, been dealing with TelkomZA and today got Telkom to put me on a new port in the exchange and I am still experiencing line drops.
Often when my line drops the stats go to sheet, get really bad. Like my downstream SNR just now dropped to 3.6dB and my line was syncing at 9Mbit then on my 20Mbit VDSL profile.
My line dropped a few more times and will become stable for quite a while soon.

I have monitored my house to make sure that there are no weird electronics which turn on / off when I experience this issue and have found nothing of that sort. The line runs completely outside and into my bedroom directly and it avoids any sort of power cables anyways.

I really have no clue what to do and Telkom are getting desperate as well and are trying to blame it on my routers yet again, stating that I need to get a Pace router - so I will try and get a test Pace router from them and prove to them that it is not the router.

I am hoping someone here is able to help me out with what it could be or what I can ask Telkom to try and do to resolve the issue.

Thanks,
Psy

Mine also started randomly giving kuk 3 weeks ago.

Dropping every 30 seconds, SNR from 20db to 0.2

Here are my stats on my 20Mbit VDSL profile:

As you can see all looks perfect and peachy. Far from it :(
Mine started about 2 or 3 months ago. PLEASE I need someone to give me ideas as to what could possibly be done to resolve this.

I do not have any phone in the house, my router is connected directly to the wall socket with no filter or anything in between, I have tried a different telephone cable from the wall socket to my router even.

Get a phone from a neighbour just to see if there is any noise whatsoever. Its worth a shot.

Yeah, I will do that tonight as well as put on a micro-filter with the phone. That is how desperate I am getting right now :P
Doubt it will make a difference, but you never know.

See my post here - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/544781-TelkomZA?p=13726584&viewfull=1#post13726584

... apparently when Telkom tested for noise from the exchange their stats were OK so they just closed the fault (after dropping me to 8mbps). When a technician finally pitched he explained to me they had to come on-site to find the fault between the pole and my jack. The bad joint was triggered by a week of cold wet weather followed by a berg wind last Monday

Well I have not had any power for the last two days, except for an hour yesterday in which I tested and my line dropped a few times. During the night it stills drops. 11PM, 1AM, 3AM - whenever.

@MickZA how did they manage to find the bad joint?

He tracked the line from the pole to the jack with a hand held tester (makes an audible noise). What I found interesting was that his router wouldn't sync whereas my DSL-2500Us (I tested 3) were happily syncing at 8mbps, it was the disconnects that were driving me nuts, any incoming or outgoing call would trigger one.

Ok, i know this an old thread, but i have problems with my line again. last week Thursday 2 telkom dudes came and installed a brande new cable from pole into my house. connection was rock solid without any issues and good snr and attenuation.

it started raining in cape town a few days ago and i noticed on day 1 some issues with buffering and browsing. the snr dropped from 11 down to 4-5. my attenuation went up from 11.5 to 19. phoned telkom to do a port reset with no avail. logged a fault. interesting i still had the techies number who came to my house and i told him i still have issues again. he said he told me last time that when they test the line to the exchange there is absolutely no noise at all, but as soon as they plugged in my billion 8800 nlx router, they hear noise on it. he told me to change the router.

i phoned him this morning and he said he is gonna have a look at the line again. i told him i will test it with the older tp link adsl2+ router later when i get hom.

so the question is, why does the line only give noise when the router is plugged in and as soon they unplug it the noise is gone. could it be the router? its a branding spanking new router. i am about 600m from the exchange. could it maybe because its a broadcom chip as its better for longer distances.

I would appreciate your input and advise guys.

Highly doubt it would be due to it being a Broadcom chip.

I stay around 800m - 1.1KM from the exchange (it apparently got reduced when they put me on a different exchange port). My Billion 8800 NXL router is in for repairs due to lightning although I had no issues with it at all, it could just be that your router is faulty perhaps but try with the TP Link first and then see.

My issue seems to have resolved itself, I got a landline phone and connected that without a microfilter, ran it for a few days and it seemed stable all of a sudden. I then added a microfilter and it stayed stable, lightning stuck and then I ran everything with the filters but on an ADSL 2+ router and it was still stable. Removed the phone and microfilter and still have that ADSL 2+ router and all still seems fairly stable although I have not been monitoring it as much as I was previously due to this router only supporting full bridge or PPPoE - no PPPoE pass through / half-bridge mode.

I have still had the line drop now and then with the rain it seems, but nowhere near as much as it was dropping previously (so it seems). Once I get my Billion back I will be able to monitor my line a lot better again.
Hoping to get it back soon and get back onto VDSL. :D
