Hello,

So I know its possible to create PPPoE Connections from your pcs that are connected to a dsl modem in bridged mode.

But what if I had a second Dsl Modem (With WIFI), could I dial up to my ISP of choice through the first router using another Dsl Modem (wifi) router device?

What if any of the settings should I change in the setup wizard? VCI etc?

Just to make sure I'm following you:

Router 1 dials ABC ISP.
Router 2 connects to Router 1 via wifi and dials PPPoE to ISP XYZ via Router 1 so that both connections run over the same copper.

Right?

No don't change the VCI.

Theoretically it should possible, but not really supported. You'd need to login to router 2 via telnet, probably upload a (linux) PPPoE dialer and force it to go over wifi instead of the modem circuitry. Thats assuming you can get the routers to talk to each other. I certainly would attempt this path & would recommend against it unless your a leet linux hacker.

I don't quite understand *why* you'd want to do that. Just use the router 2 as a range extender & dial pppoe normally. i.e. that way the PC connecting to router 2 does the dialing, not the router hardware. Should work.

Modem 1 Dials nothing (Set to bridge mode)
Usually Pc1 and Pc2 dial through Modem 1 for their ISP

This time only Pc1 will dial through Modem 1 as it usually did.
Pc2 will now connect to Modem 2 that is connected to Modem 1.

Modem 2 must do the same job as Pc1 and be able to make its own PPPoE connection through bridged Modem 1 to its ISP.

Would I stil be able to dial to my own ISP on Pc2 as well as using Modem2's ISP incase I needed? over wifi for example

Anything is really possible but it depends if router 2 supports such a configuration. I would need to support Half Bridge (as they call it) as well as changing the PPPoE dailer interface. Very doubtful with Soho routers.

This is a problem. Routers can generally do:
  • Dial a connection via their own circuitry
  • Pass through PPPoE connections from another device.
  • Range extend wifi

The functionality you want (Modem 2 dials up up a PPPoE which will pass through Modem 1 via bridging) is not provided for. The only dialing routers do is via their own ADSL circuitry. As I said, it might be possible by adding that functionality manually, but it would require mad skills esp if the linux dialer loaded is non-standard.

As I said though I really don't get what you're trying to achieve here. What benefit are you hoping to get from using 2 modems?

the second modem was fried by lightning (Only dsl port rest is functioning), im hoping to use it at the second part of our business (Clients) as an intelligent wifi router a/p :D

Client's should use a different ISP set than us

I know with the Billion routers there is a way to change the dialing interface but you would need a bit of know how. I also bought a Tenda modem from IC that supports both ADSL and WAN port so I bet with a bit of tweaking it would be possible.

Ah got it. I'd still suggest jamming it all into 1 router:

Set router to half-bridge mode (Often the standard mode is half-bridge). Find an option called "Wireless isolation" or "AP isolation" & switch that on. Client ISP config goes into the router, Home/Family ISP dialed via PPPoE from PC. You'll probably have to go with WPA 1 PSK for the AP, so ideally you'd want to set up an access list on the router (if it can). If you're dialing the Home ISP via wifi then the isolation should prevent hack attempts from client PCs, if its wired then it depends on the router...some isolation wired connections & wifi others don't. If not then you'll need a firewall on the PCs for good measure.

I know you want to utilize both routers...don't see that happening here though except for maybe wifi range extending.

Thats new to me. Its possible I suppose that some manufacturers might include the functionality. Would surprise me though tbh.

I tried something and it didn't work lol..

I dislike my planet router's interface. Everything doesn't yet make sense to me. Maybe I should try this at another stage in my N+ education :p
