I'm in the market for a new DSL wireless router since my last one got fried by lightning.

Most of the recommendations in this thread are either very old or discontinued.

I'm looking for a GOOD DSL router/modem/switch, 4 port 10/100 with 802.11 a/b/g wireless (XBox recommend a, although most don't have it), firewall, NAT, DHCP, etc

Any recommendations would be appreciated

i've had about 8 routers now - and i can HONESTLY say:

the netgear 834GT is the router with the FASTEST recovery from a sync loss.

as basic 4 port wifi router its 100% KICKASS product.

Can't go wrong with a D-link. Billion or Netgear.

I got a D-link DSL-2640U myself.

It does ADSL2/2+ up to 24Mbits (you can dream can you)
Should cost about R1050

but if you want excellent wireless, go for a DSL-2740U

It also does ADSL2/2+ up to 24Mbits and 802.11 b/g/draft N wireless up to 270Mbits. There is a price premium though. R2100
The newest notebooks coming out now have all got N wireless on them now. A year from now, they will be standard.

And this time get yourself a ADSL surge protector. It only costs you R180.

Whats the price range u looking in?
The best ones in the R700 range is the billion 7300G, can get at digitalplanet
Other ones in that range is SMC and TP-link, but I heard most SMC products are terrible and TP-link dont have that much of a good rep either. Though I have a TP-link myself...after figuring out how to set it up properly, its been running quite nice lately.

If u look higher range in prices, I would suggest netgear :)
Some friends got them and they all seem to be pretty happy with them.

Though I would get something that just works and have good after sale support...dont get much of those these days :p

Make the right choice, get a telkom router :D

Telkom are now offering a free Voip WiFi router with their Do packages. Voip WiFi routers cost a lot more than standard routers. It's definitely worth a look. It's a Zyxel IAD P2602. I haven't tried it myself but the Voip feature is quite attractive i.e. I assume you just plug in your analog phone, program the Sip server etc. and you can make Voip calls directly from your old phone. It can also produce ADSL bits per tone plots etc. which can be very useful when your ADSL line gives problems which could be at any time. Maybe you can get feedback on the Internet or from somebody who owns one. It may also work with DMT (some Zyxels do) which is probably the best router tool available - allows you to increase router transmission power, change the target SNR of the DSLAM etc. You can't do this with a Billion. It costs around R600 to add an ATA to a standalone router so that you can use it for Voip. As ADSL speeds increase routers need to be tweaked to get the best performance out of the line. My guess is that it costs about R800 from a Telkom but I may be wrong. Maybe somebody else knows more.

arent the Voip telkom routers the ones that comes with 2 year contracts? They cost almost 2k if I'm not mistaken.

The free ones are mega 100WRs which are R800....even the mega 200WR costs 1.6k...

Anyways a follow up on my tp-link router...they won the best quality for price award in Poland by PC format :p

@Nameite: Some forumites in this thread and others claim that Telkom is giving these away to new Do customers. I must say that I wouldn't mind a router that can do Voip even if it's from Telkom and could be difficult to configure. Maybe they are planning to offer some type of Voip service otherwise their new customers will start looking around for their own independent providers.
