Hi all,

I'm moving to a new place unfortunately not connected to fibre.

There is an existing Telkom line and the previous tenant had DSL luckily.

What are the best ISP, packages around these days? And turnaround time?

Thanks.

imho... Vox has been quite reliable compared to others over a few years. Using promo fatpipe accounts which are capped but more than enough for my monthly usage.

They're actually pretty cheap!

What kind of speed can I expect with it?

Im using the accounts on an Openserve Fibre line 100/50 and generally get full line speed locally at around 3ms and international varies but usually around 75% or so.

You should be getting line speed on the fatpipe accounts.

Two other questions:
- will the Cell C LTE/fibre router work on a DSL line?
- My landlord pays a Telkom phone line which is already active, do I need to do anything with Telkom or Vox other than just subscribe to Fatpipe online? Vox just gives me the ID/password to enter in the router and it's supposed to work?

If you want ADSL then

No , you need an ADSL modem router
You need an ADSL line before you can use the fatpipe data

I'm not sure what the landlord pays for, I just have the line number and an invoice for R194.9 without the detail of the services provided.

Can Vox supply the DSL line? Or does the landlord need to do it with Telkom?

The previous tenant had DSL.

Not sure about Vox, but the likes of Afrihost can provide it. Best to get it from Telkom directly. Just my opinion others may disagree.

Thanks, I'll try to activate the Fatpipe and see if it works once the router is plugged in.

If something else needs to be activated, I'll deal with it afterwards.

Any idea if the Cell C LTE/fibre router will work on DSL?

I doubt it. But it should have a WAN port so you can use a very cheap ADSL modem. What is the model of that Cell C router ?

It's that one. https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/cell-c-rtl30vw-lte-a-home-router-all-we-know-about.883976/

Seems like it's off to a good start with Vox, I just subscribed and paid and receive a SMS that 50% of my data has been used (though it might be because it's pro rated for June).

I do have an old old router in a box otherwise, should be in a box somewhere (not sure if fibre or DSL since it was left by the previous tenant of my previous flat).

Any suggestion of a cheap and reliable DSL router otherwise (nothing hectic, just to connect laptop, Fire Stick and phone in a 2 bedroom flat so no need for anything over the top)?

that's a nice WiFi router. So just get the cheapest modem and hook it up via the wan port. Or very cheap WIFI router will probably cover your place like this.

Thanks, I'll try the one I have in that box first, and go for that should it not work!

I can now set you free, I think I have every angle covered!

Thanks a mil for your patience.

Hi, finally got the router and the subscription to Vox but now I cannot connect.

Anyone seeing anything wrong in my settings? All the lights on the modem are as they should.

Not sure if this still works, but try the test account

pass :guest

You should be able to access the Telkom site

Nothing either.

Vox support tells me to check with Telkom so I'll ask him to do so since the line is in his name.

Did you intentionally leave out the rest of your username?

The complete username usually looks like this: [email protected]

Also, many years ago when I first got ADSL, you had to verify the line on the Telkom website so that Telkom's billing system knows when you started to use it. Don't know if you still have to do that?
