DSL Sync Issues

Around the end of December my connection would get a massive amount of noise at times and continuously drop sync. At the time I was using a DG834G, went out and bought a new DG834G which didn't work but when I plugged back the old router it worked until the second week in January at which time the router started dropping sync every 2-3 hours.

I replaced the router with a Telkom Mega 100WR after being told that my router was probably faulty. The problem persisted with the new router for a few days and then I started losing sync every 30-32 hours. This kept on happening until the middle of February when the problem just stopped. Everything was fine until the start of March when the line again started but this time the router would not sync again afterward for a few minutes or in the last few cases hours-days.

The first fault I reported got dealed with very quickly but no problem could be found on the line, at this point I had already started logging sync status to one of my servers. I phoned in 3 days after logging another fault to find out the status of the fault because my line was still not syncing and the call center agent told me that according to his case log the technicians working on the problem could not get their modem to sync on the line either and that there were weird power spikes on the line. Next afternoon at around 15:00 the line synced but dropped again the next day. I phoned in yet again and was told the line fault was resolved and there were no notes of power issues or the technicians not being able to sync either.

Sunday night the router lost sync again and I could not reconnect, this was resolved on Monday morning and on Tuesday a technician came out to inform me that there were issues related to exchange upgrades in the whole area and that this caused my faults. So today I log into my server and check the logs,

Apr 1 21:30:19 login.router : DSL out of sync
Apr 1 21:30:19 login.router : DSL in Sync
Apr 2 05:04:15 login.router : DSL out of sync
Apr 2 05:04:15 login.router : DSL in Sync
Apr 2 05:30:58 login.router : DSL out of sync
Apr 2 05:30:58 login.router : DSL in Sync

Every time this happens the router does not drop the connection but I've got hundreds of these entries during the times just before my sync dies. At 14:41 the router dropped sync again and frankly I'm tired of logging faults and being told that there is no problem, anyone got any ideas regarding this?

have you tested by unplugging EVERYTHING ( all filters, faxes, telephones, surge protectors, any ups) and also checking with another RJ11 cable.

there are so many things you can test.

try another router from a friend also.

The only thing connected is the router and have also tried other RJ11 cables yeah.
I've tried a total of 3 routers (all working at other locations).

alrighty...check then if you can get the program routerstats going...log a 5second interval of your DS MARGIN for say 2-3 hours

Send ADSL tech support an email explaining your situation, all the routers you have swapped, cabling, devices removed etc and ask them to move you to a different port on the DSLAM. Insist they paste this information into Webforce if they decide to dispatch a tech to the exchange.

If you phone them you are going to have to repeat the whole story to every person you speak to as they don't seem to record info when you log a request via phone.

I've been monitoring the DS Margin for just over 12 hours, stayed on 11 for most of the early morning hours to around 08:00 when it spiked to 13, at 11:00 it went to 18 and around 12 it went to 22 (which it's at right now).

@ponder, Thanks for the suggestion. Will try that.

I have been having a similar issue for the past 2 weeks now. My previously very stable ADSL connection (has been stable since installation, over a year ago) has become very erratic with frequesnt disconnects and re-connects.. my router stats show :

Upstream 512 kbps
Downstream 4096 kbps
Noise Margin (Upstream) 8.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 7.5 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 31.5 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 34.0 db

Nothing else is connected to line apart from the router (Billion 7300G). I have logged a fault to telkom, but still waiting for a response...
