Hi,
Wondering why no ISPs have come up with a cheap adsl option with a small cap, e.g. R50pm for 0.5G cap etc.
I would've thought there'd be some market for this? I know I'd certainly cancel my ISDN and go to dsl192 + R50 ISP if it existed...

  1. ISDN + R80 ISP + R100 phone calls = +- R400pm
  2. dsl192 + R50 ISP + analog rental = +- R460pm

I'm sure there are many that don't necessarily want to do huge downloads, but do want regular email / http / instant messaging, "always on" type internet access (e.g. vpn to work, work from home)...

Is there a reason no such package exists?
Is the profit margin to small for the admin overhead costs or something? Yet one can buy some webspace for R10pm...

ISP's can only resell Telkom / Saix accounts up to now.
IS and UUNET are both working towards having their own infrestructure in the exchanges and their own International bandwidth, so things could change in the future.
Good idea, I hope that one of them picks it up. (but VPN will use a lot more than .5G I would expect).

Interesting...
I actually use VPN quite a bit over my ISDN, and it doesn't use much bandwidth. Granted, we're a smallish company, and there are almost no windows machines in our company (95% linux) so there is no superfluous network traffic floating around. It pretty much uses only the bandwidth that I request from things like mail or local network browsing or source code repository etc.

can someone create a poll for this?

For R50 they could give you 0.5gig intl and like 5gig local.
That would be just fantastic for me personally! I would go for it in a heartbeat! 0.5GB intl is more than enough to satisfy my normal browsing and the occasional download, and the 5gig local would be nice for adsl gaming, downloads from mirrors etc.
I hope there is a clued up ISP representative surfing this board somewhere...
Maybe someone with rights can create a poll to see how many people would be interested in this type of deal??

Something along the lines of:
Poll:
would you be interested in paying an ISP R50/month for an adsl account with 0.5GB intl cap and unlimited or large local cap?
[Y]
[N]

I think the minority of users would be interested in that, although that doesn't mean it shouldn't be offered, the more options the better.

The ISP who comes up with an online Connection Package Builder where u can choose caps, speeds, extra services and add or remove things like mailboxes and have a control panel for everything will make money easily.. put together your package online, place the order, have it installed, then go play with your settings and see what the price adds up to when adding/removing features.. can't be that tough eh? Something like this

That would be nice, and really should not be that difficult to do.

I still think there's a reasonable market for people who want "always on fixed price" internet, but don't care too much for huge downloads.

I reckon a lot of SA dial up users would switch to dsl on a cheap account like this - a lot of 'older' users who just do email and browsing and maybe some skype to kids in other countries. I know at least 5 users in my own family!

I'm sure I've said this before - there is no way that HomeDSL192 is cheap, perhaps more affordable for some than HomeDSL384 || HomeDSL512 || BusinessDSL512.

I think we should outlaw using the words cheap and Telkom in the same context/sentence. I would have no problem with people calling HomeDSL192 less expensive instead of using the word 'cheap'.

Does anybody know whether perhaps somebody on the market is able to offer such an account yet? I haven't seen anything on hellkom (which I tend to use inter alia as an ISP price list)...

Quite frankly I can't see the point.

If all you want is a little bit of VPN, email and the odd bit of surfing, then just stick to ISDN or basic Dial-Up.

I've used VPN connections to the UK when I was on Dial-Up and when I was on ISDN and speed was fine.

People who use ADSL are 99% of the time, the more serious surfer, gamer, downloader, or business

10pm for 500MB local webhosting? Please show me where you find this :)

The point is that speed is not the issue for me, and I'm betting for a lot of other people. 64 or 128kbps is plenty, as long as it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg to stay online every day the whole day. If it was just email and surfing, then dial-on-demand is OK (especially since ISDN is connected in about 2 seconds), but for VPN, skype and IM you want to be permanently online, even though very little data is flowing unless you're actually in a skype call or transferring large files over the VPN or whatever.

I guess the fact that such a thing doesn't exist on the market possibly suggests that maybe I AM the only one who thinks an option like this would be useful

3g

Well then what about 3G, You can get a package for R350pm and you get 500mb, additional data is R2.00 per MB.

Ok, the downside is that the only cards available locally are for Laptops, but overall, pretty much what you're looking for.

Interesting, I hadn't considered that. Unfortunately I'd have to buy a laptop and the 3G adapter then...

I'm guessing its "illegal" to "share" an ADSL connection among several neighbours using WiFi?

It is "illegal" but who "cares"?

If you can share your internet in your own home on your LAN, then the same should apply to WiFi, since it is basically an extension to a LAN. The legalities come in with your signal crossing your property border, but since i use my cell phone, which also crosses my property border everytime i phone or sms, i dont see the problem.

Its not like your gonna start a WISP, right?

Now just how are you supposed to stop those pesky waves from crossing your boundry? ;)

Yes, and how am I supposed to stop the neighbours giving me donations from time to time?
