I got one from work to play around with and was wondering, is see for the input you can use a rj45 cable. Would it be possible to take for instance a 1 meg adsl line connect it to a adsl modem and then connect it to the DSLAM so you can then split the 1 meg ADSL line into 3 or 4 seperate ADSL lines? If not what kind of unit plugs into a DSLAM and in what form is the data being sent to the DSLAM?

Hmm, the DSL Modem normally connects to the DSLAM via a single pair (2 wires) CAT3 wire... This is what telkom installs in your home.
The DSLAM normally connects to a BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server), and this normally happens via ATM, Gigabit Networks, or some form of Fiber Optics.
The RJ45 you see, are more than likely a console port of some sorts. The DSL Ports (where the modems go in), are normally cards that slides into slots on the DSLAM. I don't think you've been given a complete kit to play with
Ask them for more goodies!

Ask them for more goodies!Thanks for the reply but the manual says that the rj45 connectors is the input but it supports up to a gigabit connection. There is also 2 fiber optic connectors and the manual says it does automatic switch over between the fiber optic and the rj45 connectors depending on which one is plugged in.

There is no such thing as a physical 1Mb line, copper can carry a lot more than 1Mb - but distance, line noise, and general quality of the line effect that max throughput.
For the purposes of your question, you can split all the upstream bandwidth feasible between 4 users in theory.But the DSLAM needs it's upstream from the ATM network, via the fibre or RJ-45 link?

Telkom is busy upgrading their ATM backbone to IP. This should in theory give them the capability to increase speeds quite a bit.
