DSTV 16:9

Quite a few actually..

but a fair few of them switch between 16:9 and 4:3 depending on the content.
Like Series will tell you the next show is in 16:9 and then the aspect ratio changes when the show starts.

Might it depend what decoder you have, whether HD or non?

AFAIK the only way for SD to be 16:9 is by upscaling and such done by the HD PVR. Stand corrected.

Pretty much all SD channels are better viewed in 4:3 mode, but that's me. I use black bars to compensate the poor SD picture quality on my 32" LCD.

No, SD broadcasts can be in 16:9 as well so it's not a function of the HD PVR

So basically. no channels are 16:9 yet, and only some shows?

Well I think most of the MM channels are mostly in 16:9. Sky news is 16:9... I think it's more down to the content than anything else.

Ahh right, checked now and Sky is all squashed while using 4:3 mode, so it must be. Now if only Supersport would follow suit. :)

It bugs me especially on series when they change from 4:3 during their ad's to 16:9, you'd think they would just change their format to 16:9 since most of their show are in 16:9 and what's the deal with their sound equalisation between the adverts and the actual show, why can't the volume levels be uniform too?

I think it's purely to annoy you!

I can't understand why I have to adjust the volume each time the ads come on.

I have my decoder set to 16:9 with 4:3 content stretched. My panel does the scaling (I think). It does a fairly decent job. Honestly the 4:3 stretched content looks pretty normal to me... but then I'm probably used to it.

Yeah, it's very annoying. Especially when you've dropped the remote 'somewhere' and you're 100% in zombie mode and all of a sudden there's someone screaming at your face advertising something that you will never understand. Can really f&%$k with one's viewing pleasure.

Sorry but this is OT.

Multichoice says they do not control the volume of the ads that they show, but do they control the volume of the actual shows? If they do they can increase the volume of the show so that when an add plays the volume is the same.

Copout answer. If my AVR can do dynamic compression then I'm sure their multimillion rand systems can do something similar.

Monochoice just don't give a **** about you.

Yes I am sure they can fix it so the volumes are the same if they wanted to. The add volumes are just damn annoying.
