DSTV ads sound volume

Can't be done - justifiable, given cost and bandwidth issues for RPM - post it up on ImageShack...

"Please stop turning the volume up so loudly during the adverts. It is making customers reach for the remote and mute the adverts. Not only that, it is also incredibly annoying.

I cannot watch TV late at night due to this problem, as it disturbs other members of my household.

I understand that it is international practice to turn up the volume slightly during adverts - the problem is that DSTV (and SABC, mind you) are making the volume EXCESSIVE.

Please contact me to discuss this further."

Debbie2 - the adverts in Dutch are quite common feature, I forgot about them as they don't happen every day, unlike the other issues mentioned, but obviously that is a big problem as well!

it's nothing wrong with your batteries. It is their software updates. Either incompetence of their technical staff, or intentionally done to make you waste your money for PVR.

I have spoken to them, maybe not to the right people though. I have somewhere a huge email full of bullsh*t, explaining that technically it is very difficult to fix the loud adverts problem. I don't believe this, I can do it on my inferior home PC, I bet they can do it as well. I have spoken to them on the phone as well, they always tell me that it is not under they control bla bla bla, when I ask them why they don't take the issue to whoever is in control, they start explaining how complicated it is and how there are no standards and common agreenment over this stuff.

Bottom line is I DON'T CARE who is to blame! Whoever is responsible MUST fix it!

Sent them this:
The complete disregard and lack of any sort of consideration for the sensibilities and preferences of your clients, beggars all belief - TURN THE AD VOLUME DOWN AND ENSURE THAT FLIGHTING IS PROPERLY SYNCRONISED WITH THE SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING, WOULD YOU?!!

You should provide some details of that ad - time flighted, duration, content, etc. - would perhaps assist, if somebody from Multichoice indeed takes the initiative and investigates, including potential visits to this forum...

swordfish1, perhaps you could email that to a few chosen newspapers? Or if you don't want to, maybe you could email me those pictures and I will happily write to the papers and attach those pics. Like mbs says, do you have more details about times ect that those records were made? PM me for an email addy if needed.

Those pictures are shocking, btw.

well, I wrote the names of the programs on the one screenshot (SB means Standard Bank advert), I didn't do it on the other. The time is probably the time the screenshot was taken, which appears to be 6 September 2005, 20:41:58 for the first one and 03 October 2005, 19:06:34 for the second (probably few minutes befoore the actual timestamp). Unfortunatelly I didn't write down any more details, but I will happily take more screenshots and write down more details about them.

Also note that I am watching frequently only about 5-6 channels from the lot, so I have no experience with most of them.

Anyone can use the screenshots posted here for whatever purposes they like, I don't mind.

I just send them another complain from the link Debbie2 posted earlier. The complain I wrote is quite strong, hope they take it seriously (huh). Will see if they phone me tomorrow with even more non-sense explanations.

ok, new one, just recorder

This is about 22.10h on 16 November 2005, on Discovery, during the "The Flight That Fought Back", it is about 150 sec, includes multiple adverts, have not written down the names of the ads.

It is quite obvious where the adverts end :)

OMW, that really does give a good idea of the volume difference! Thanks so much for doing that Swordfish1!!

Debbie2, if you are a good writer, please, by all means, write to wathever newspapers you deem good. My English is not very rich, and I am not sure that I can write something on such level, so it grab everyone's attention. I have no problem taking the issue with the Multichoice management though, so I will keep you all posted about that. Thanks for the support.

Right swordfish1, I have mailed 702, The Citizen, one of the IOL papers and News24. Lets see if any of them take this up.

Thanks again for the pictures!!!!

12 years ago I used to work at Mnet. The guy in control room had no control over volume, it's set to one level, he used to bitch that advertisers would take advantage of that fact by supplying a tape with a really clean audio signal a few db's higher than the norm and there weren't **** he could do about it. Used to annoy him too. I though then and I still think now, it should be pretty easy to shape the sound.

Thought I'd add that the whole system is a mecanical robot arm, that physically moves up and down inside a room removing and inserting tapes as they are needed for playback on air, so each advertiser submits their own tape which gets inserted and removed by this robot arm thing as needed. So you're looking at a bunch of different tapes with different sound quality, recorded at higher db levels, which the advertisers do take advantage of

That robotic thing has been around for at least 20 years - saw it for the first time in the 80's at NBC. I also cannot believe that the technology does not exist and has not been implemented to manage audio appropriately at Multichoice - if so, somebody needs to be fired...
