Broadband constraints will apply either way - doesn't make sense this statement.

EDIT: OK, speed of streaming not just total bandwidth used.
 
A 720p Blu-ray movie is around 25-30 gigs. If they really want to offer VOD over the net they'll have to compress the living daylights out of it.
 
You can already do all this on a Apple TV and even better download all the latest and greatest movies that are either still forth coming attractions at Cinema or are already showing.
 
I wonder if the software they use will allow for full-screen viewing on 40" LCD [as it should be seen] or be like the Drifta or current VoD service they offer with limited screen size?

Not even close. 2-4 gigs is more like it. Remember, streaming HD video is heavily compressed.

True, true, but pricing and data cost quickly catches up with you.
They should have a sit down talk with either CellC/8ta, because these two companies are the only one doing anything about data cost.
 
Send many SMSs the last hour, and nothing. Phoned them now, and guess what, they have technical problem, apparently did not expect the huge response.
F**k them, could have rented the movie I wanted in the store.

At least 720p or I'll skip. I do have a lcd larger than 14" for a reason...
 
I wonder if they'll be able to sream it to consoles like Netflix and Hulu in the US, skyTV in the UK and canal+ in France. Or like video rental on Zune (Where the video gets downloaded to your console and you watch it and it gets deleted after 48 hours). That would be very convenient as most consoles already have hard drives to allow for buffering.

720p = 2 to 5 gigs.
1080p = 8 to 20 gigs.

That's assuming they are using h.264 to encode the video, but as far as I know, they have always used mpeg2 which will result in much higher file sizes for similar quality.
Perhaps this is why their current broadcast quality isn't that good: they only have enough bandwidth for (x) mpeg2 channels instead of (x*2) h.264 channels, and are unwilling to pay for a codec license..
 
Quality related to bitrate ...

DSTV SD (576i MPEG2) = 6Mbps peak
DSTV HD (1080i MPEG4/H.264) = 15Mbps peak
FHD RIP (1080p MPEG4/H.264) = variable depending compression settings, 10-20Mbps peak
Bluray (1080p MPEG2 or MPEG4/H.264 or VC-1) = 40Mbps peak
