A video-on-demand service, similar to Netflix in the USA, is set to make its debut in South Africa.

VOD:TV, formed by the SouthTel Group, is promising to offer the latest movies and TV series before DStv, TechCentral reported.

The service won't offer live TV itself, but will allow subscribers to download and store content to the PVR for later viewing.

Roughly half the content delivered to users will be included as part of the monthly subscription, which won't be more than R200, the SouthTel Group's Oscar Dube told TechCentral.

The rest of the content, including blockbuster films, will be available to rent at a cost of between R25 and R40.The network will also offer entire seasons of TV shows at once, as opposed to the weekly format employed by traditional channels.

The PVR will contain a 500GB hard drive as well as an Ethernet port for web connectivity. The device will also make use of a USB port for 3G dongles, allowing subscribers to surf the internet.

External hard drives can also be used to boost storage capacity, the company said.

Impressive. So would you be able to download wirelessly or through ADSL?

The idea of funding infrastructure other than the internet to provide Television these days is insane. I honestly hope DSTV has its near future expansion figured out, once the pipes are really opened on this country, an event which is very rapidly moving towards us, people will have less and less need for tertiary devices for entertainment.

it seems promising...but who is going to pay for the data costs? uh huh...back to sq1??

and then ROTFLMA @

"We offer: New-release movies, Big-screen blockbusters, Classics, Hit TV series, Personalized Music play-list, Education mostly in high-definition. "

imagine the speeds you require to download HI-DEF content?

Its over satellite, read the 1st of the 3 threads that are now running

This is very appealing to me, since I don't have uncapped ADSL and also a slow line speed.
Can't wait to see this offer. Definite alternative to overpriced DSTV.

Nothing gets downloaded. The stuff is playing in the background and your pvr recorded it in realtime every night after 12.The same thing happens with dstv cathup.

Pretty much the time it takes to play.

Just took Netflix for a spin last night.

Not bad, but they will do better if they broaden their latest releases library.
