I recently downloaded a TV programme from Dstv Catchup using Firefox Video Downloader Help. Unfortunately I was unable to view the file due, I suspect, to Dstv using an unknown Codec. Does anyone know which Codec they use.

What is the file extension? Download VLC - if it can't play it then you might have to get a very specific codec but VLC plays most things. :)

Anyone thought about the possibility of DRM being the cause?

The file extension has nothing to do with the codec used.

I know - but I was interested to know what type of file it is for interests sake.
It doesn't matter. As far as I know most of this stuff is parsed to elementary streams before decoding. The container, usually denoted by the file extension, is demultiplexed into elementary streams then fed to the decoder.

VLC doesn't rely on the file extension, it instead examines the file and looks for headers.

I now remember something I did a while back... those streams from DSTV are encrypted, and I was not able to break it with any known tools.

Afaik the downloaded file plays fine in WMP (this was a while back) as long as you have the Silverlight Player installed and connected as the DRM would authenticate

Thank you for the info man. Appreciate it :)

Ah yes, correct, I remember that trick.

I remember being able to play downloaded clips through WMplayer, but before playback i would sign into my connect account, the player would then download the DRM licenses and playback follows
