DStv blocks AfriForumTV launch video on YouTube

DStv had YouTube take down the launch video of a new Afrikaans streaming service based on a suspicious copyright claim.

The target of South Africa's biggest pay-TV broadcaster was AfriForumTV, a new Afrikaans-focused video streaming service launched by civil rights organisation AfriForum on Monday.
 
Afriforum should have called DSTV's bluff and submitted a counter notification if they had the rights to the content.

What happens next?​

Your counter notification will be forwarded to the claimant if it meets all legal requirements and clearly explains your right to use the content. Under most circumstances, we won't forward the counter notification to any party other than the original claimant. If the counter notification is forwarded, it will include the full text, including any personal info you’ve entered.

The claimant has 10 business days, as required by copyright law, to reply to your counter notification. They’ll need to respond with evidence that they’ve taken legal action to keep the content from being restored to YouTube.

That would have forced DSTV to take Afriforum to court for copyright infringement, elsewise retract the claim. They can usually win attorney's fees if the defendant can prove that the claimant was doing it maliciously.

Hopefully they get it sorted. But they are not the only ones struggling with this. I have watched so many channels where the Content Creators are super frustrated with YouTube removing stuff, even stuff they own. YouTube doesn't have the capacity to monitor and check every request they receive and can take weeks to months to sort something out. So they end up just having to cut it out until YouTube gets their kitchen in order.
 
...cue incoming coffee and muffin session articles about how unfair YouTube is and taking business away from DStv!

They should have challenged the claim, IIRC, the strike remains which means you have complied basically admitting to your error. I don't know whether YouTube has changed this.
