About 18 months ago we bought a DSD 933 decoder. Up until recently it has worked fine no problems at all.

However recently while a program is on, it will freeze with an image of the program. Stuck, the data services work, guide, info bar. However all the video and audio is gone.

Only way to solve it is to reboot the decoder.

WTF could the problem be?

This is a extremely common issue on nearly all the 9xx decoders (mine too). Just browse the DStv forums to see all the bitching.
Quick way around it is just to pull the mart card out until you get a E07 error and reinsert it. Doesn't help when it happens at 23:00 at night and all you record is a black screen for 2 hours instead of a movie/doccie...

You telling me there is no permanent fix for this:eek:

I feel you pain Linoman, mine does the same, and I sometimes lose some channels, they are still "fixing" my DMX. I agree with wcoetzee, that seems to be the only option and am now looking for a cheap secondhand one, too see if that solves my problem.

MC have been getting back to me for about 3 months regarding this problem. At least they have the decency to phone me occasionally to say that they're still investigating (although the call is starting to sound like something pre-recorded...)

OMF, I can't believe its such a common problem. Good grief MC incompetence at its best

Multichoices hardware leaves much to be desired IMO. They supply you with a decoder that has less processing power than a digital photo frame and then try and send you 400 encrypted mpeg streams through it alongside a ton of useless interactive rubbish nobody uses. Tell me why do the things run so hot and keep breaking down? It's like running Vista on a 486.

386 i would say :) but i have to agree with you, the decorders are rubbish. Cant we buy normal branded decoders from outside the country, insert the smartcard and of we go ?

Surely you need the DSTV software to decrypt the signal, watch on-demand shows and take advantage of the whatever future upgrades they make?

I stand to be corrected, but as far as I'm aware you can use any decoder that is irdeto enabled (the encryption system MC use) and that has a CAM (conditional access module) for your smartcard. The encryption is done in real time using a constantly changing algorithm decoded by a combination of the irdeto software, the smart card and the info on the broadcast stream. Thus any irdeto enabled decoder can do the job - MC just discourage (probably block) their importation.

edit : such as

dammit :(

well this all just sucks! adsl expensive, dstv expensive and if you want to watch the german bouquet, fork out another few hundred bucks like we have to every month :(

Just another monopoly it seems. Do you know if the new pvr sd and pvr hd have the same problems?

I bought the HD PVR and promptly returned it after 2 few days because of issues. It just didn't work - full stop!!! Nothing came up on screen at all. Had someone come in and install it for me and he suggested I take it back - so I had the guy re-install the old SD PVR (which has not given me any problems at all btw) and got a refund from the AV place for the HD PVR. It looks pretty sweet, I will concede - but I could have paid R20 for a non-functioal box if that's what I really wanted...

Thanks man. I will give the SD a try then.:)

Prices on a SD PVR? How much more will it cost a month?
