I am wonder if Monochoice has done this on purpose to get people to buy their PVR system.... My story :

I bought a Philips DVD Recorder at HiFi Coruption back in 2007. It broke after 10 months and went back for repairs. They got back to me after 2 months and, needless to say, it was still broken.

They gave me a huge discount on upgrading to a Philips 160GB HDD/DVD recorder. I took it and it was very impressive except for issues with the AGC (Auto Gain Control). I only had it connected to my Monochoice DSD990 via high quality RCA cables and could not understand why it had these flashes when you had scenes with white and black sections on the screen. At this stage I did not suspect the DSD990 to be at fault as was fairly new and did not do the same with my old Philips DVD Recorder nor with my Samsung VHS Recorder. I took the new 160GB baby back to HiFi Corruption and they told me they would let me know when they have stock.

Two months later I call them up and they tell me I should rather settle for a 320GB LG model. I though since Philips gave me so much blues I will switch to LG. But after hooking it up I found it did the same as the Philips! I bought a new DSD 1110 Compact and after a lot of red tape got it working. The flashes are less obvious now but still there. I am now living with it but it still bothers me.

I feel like an idiot for taking the Philips 160GB back as it was perfect and I loved it. The LG is OK - not as good as the Philips - but the whole exercise was a waste of time because the problem was with the DStv decoder and not the HDD Recorders

Why is the video signal levels from the DSD990 so strong that is freaks out the HDD Recorders gain control ? And why is this less prominent in the DSD1110 ? Is Monochoice doing this on purpose ?

Anyone else with similar experiences ?

Hi -
I've got a dual view decoder hooked up to a 250Gb LG DVD recorder. It records perfectly - no flashes or anything. Are u sure its a dstv prob or a hi-fi corp prob. I havent had good experiences with them so I stay far away from their stuff.

Are you using RCA cables? Perhaps it is on the entry level decoders then that they skimp on the composite signal handling...
