DStv dominance must be challenged: Minister

I have to agree with Koos Bekker here, BUT, let me pay for the game I want to watch. I now pay R600+ a month to watch one rugby game a week. That is R150 per game.
 
More hot air from a Minister that did not bother to understand the pay-tv landscape before commenting. If anything, his comments has vague tones of nationalisation.
 
The big issue is here is not accessibility for poor people, but why are media companies paying the bills for sports clubs. Once this issue is addressed, exclusive tv rights become easier to deal with in a fair way.

What?! The Billionaire CEO of the Multi-Billion dollar earning monopoly broadcaster doesn't want his exclusive cake eaten? How unexpected.
 
I don't think Koos has a case. His ramblings only justify his means to a fat cat sandwich.

The business model can always be changed. So what his saying is that currently only DSTV can support soccer in its current form.

There are other sponsors out there. SAFA must wake up and go look.

ETV will also pay. I'm sure they don't want it for free. SABC as well. There can be other business models available.

His sorry excuse for a cheating capitalist does not sit well with me.
 
I get the idea that the main debate of whether sport should be more accessible circulates around football. Rugby is a side-show in this matter. So in the end is not going to make much of a difference to those that are not into football.
 
I do not totally agree with Koos Bekker. Yes the money comes from TV, but there's nothing stating that all the money must come from one TV network. In any case at their rates you may as well go watch the games.

Excerpt from Wikipedia concerning american football broadcasting rights (which btw are the most expensive broadcasting rights in television): "Under the current television contracts, which began during the 2006 season, regular season games are broadcast on five networks: CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, and the NFL Network."

All that Multichoice has somehow managed is to gain 100% right to broadcast certain sporting events in SA. Even the freaking Olympic games. And they use it aggressively to sell other content many people are not even interested in through their bundling options.

A rather cushy deal. By any standard a monopoly.
 
Only through legitimate means should dominance be "broken", i.e. not by legislation but rather by a worthy alternative, else we will just have more circus shows like ANN7 trying to entertain us.

Other than the way the government works, it is an open market.
The exclusivity comes at a price.
At the moment it seems MC is prepared to pay the price.
Correct me or is etv and SABC not willing or able to do it? and in true Africa fashion that turns Koos in a "cheating Capitalist".

Gets even more pricey if you're doing it only for F1GP! Can't justify it!
 
It's 2013 and we still don't have a bouquet of Premium DSTV, without sport or Mnet for a reasonable price. I refuse to pay over R700 a month for a couple of HD movie/series channels and my favourite documentary channels.
 
Custom bouquet, choose your own channels, now thats what we need.
