DSTV Drifta

Just looked at the useless piece of equipment I bought about 6 months ago, the DSTV Drifta. I bought one as a result of the misinformation at the time by DSTV, namely

a - The Android software will be available in April 2010. We know there is still no software available and it does not seem that there will be in the foreseeable future.
b - All major cities were covered. Only parts of the major cities were covered at the time and still are.

Surely a major company like DSTV/Multichoice must have deadlines for their operations. Information as to what % of cities were covered at the time of the world cup, what % is currently covered and at what date will cities be fully covered, must be available and should be disclosed to their customers. If cellular companies can do it why not DSTV? The same goes for a release date for Android software.

If they don't have the plans and/or deadlines it must be a pleasure working for them.

Perhaps My BB columnists can write an article and get the information from DSTV/Multichoice.

No competition = no pressure

why are the content repeated every 2 hours? I mainly bought it for the sports channels, but i just had a look at the other channels, and its a repeat every 2 hours? this might have been mentioned already, but i dont feel like trawling through the entire thread for the answer

Maiyo Simapungula, DStv's PR and communications manager, said consumer research has shown that mobile TV consumers tended to watch content in bite sizes, hence the repetitions.

"Made for mobile essentially means that the channels are optimised for the mobile viewing environment by having looped (repeat) content over a specific period," Simapungula said.

"This means that there is two hours of repeated content. At the end of the two hours the same content repeats itself for another two hours and so on until a 24-hour period is reached ... and a fresh new two hours begins to play.

"The two hours looped content is a week behind what you currently see on direct-to-home DStv."

WHAT A LOAD OF BULL CR@P !!!!

absolutely ridiculous, that its nearly September and still no Android App. Remember this was announced in 2010, for release in April 2011. There are many people, who bought Android devices, in order to take advantage of the Drifta. Not everybody can afford an iPhone, or could back then. You could get cheaper Android phones, which made the Drifta a more appealing to consumers.

Also, its worth noting, that Nokia had something like 60% market share, so why was Nokia not used to test the software. Its also worth mentioning AGAIN, that iPad could make use of the Drifta, yet it had hardly been released in SA, and in fact iPhone were few and far between consumers. You either had to be a boss, or had to earn loads of money to afford one.

The fact it was released for iPhone, says that the developers are Apple Fan Boys. It shouldn’t be that difficult to release an Android app, by just copying the iPhone app and replacing the file as an .apk file.

More importantly, the lack of a statement says that there is probably no announcement on when the app will be made available. If the devs were so confident of a release soon, then why not man up and say it will be ready on specific date? I have sent DSTV mobile an email on 2 or 3 occasions, and each time I got the same response about the app being available soon. Automated reply perhaps! You cannot say, the app will be available in April, then nothing. Then say its nearly completed, but cannot commit to a set date. It really smacks of unprofessionalism, when a company with such high volume of consumers, are treated in such a bad way.

Simple statement DSTV, when will the Android app be available? What is the current situation regarding the progress of the app? Simple straight answers, but please don’t come with this bull of the app will be available soon…

Been bitching about this since April 2nd... Thought I was the only one. We need to put pressure on them. Call the call centre in numbers on a daily basis... Moan on twitter like I do at least once a week.

This is actually making me angry.

I'm starting to doubt that they are even planning an Adroid app. Surely if they were they would have some sort of timeline instead of seemingly random promises. How do they work without plans/deadlines etc.?

It would be nice to be able to subscribe to all the sports channels especially with the rugby worldcup starting soon.

Response from MC on my complaint re the lack of an Android app - complaint lodged on 9th August 2011:
DStv Mobile is still in its introductory phase therefore different applications are been tested before brought available to our valued subscribers.

Once new devices are introduced and available, we will advise on the dstv mobile website.

There is an unforeseen technical challenge which the DStv Mobile team, Blackberry and Android are working through to try and get this to market as soon as we can.

Information regarding compatible devices and coverage areas is available on our website. We advise clients to access product information before purchasing.

We endeavor to keep clients informed with upcoming products. Once the application is available clients will be advised timeously.

Our apologies for the inconvenience caused.

"DStv Mobile is still in its introductory phase" - that's a damn long introductory phase for something in this day and age

"Once new devices are introduced and available" - I don't want any "new" device, I just want my Android app!

"There is an unforeseen technical challenge which the DStv Mobile team, Blackberry and Android are working through" - a 5-month technical challenge, mmm okay, if our service company had this, we'd be out of business

"Information regarding compatible devices and coverage areas is available on our website" - and for those like myself who did not have access to your website at time of purchase? I used the old-fashioned way of walking into your brick and mortar shop to purchase, and nothing was said about "hang on Mr Customer, what device do you have there, an Android smart phone, sorry it's not compatible, but if you'd like to come back in a few years after we've released the relevant application, you can purchase the Drifta then"

"We advise clients to access product information before purchasing" - no you didn't, you gladly took my money 8 months ago, with the promise of immanent release of the Android app by a certain date - still waiting! Maybe take back the device I cannot use, then advise me to access the information, then I'll tell you to shove it.

"We endeavor to keep clients informed with upcoming products" - no you don't, the last update was 2 months ago, and no further response!

I give up - will try and recoup some cost by flogging it off to some other poor unlucky soul - maybe they have better luck!

If anyone is interested in a brand new, unused Drifta Mobile (box opened but unused), let me know via PM...best offer wins...

My interpretation, we have the Android client app (written by vendor Valups) but its too easy to hack/abuse, so were not going release it until the vendor modifies/fixes the code.

Does anyone on here know how to even hack an app like that? I wouldn't have a clue... anyone? Maybe we should make an app?

Just realized that too... I managed tto download it but at startup, it checks with "authentication " servers and then says, "unsupported device" and gives me the option to close or goto their stupid website.
What can we do to work around this? Can iI help?

Downloaded and installed on my LG Optimus Black. Will check if it connects this evening.

I see I can't see it on my phone market place anymore... Only on the web which says, this app is incompatible with all your devices...

Pricks.
