DStv Explora Ultra 4k?

dstv does not broadcast in 4k hdr, not on the test channel anyway.

The 4k does look good on the ultra though

This is how my LG CX interprets the test channel (top right) - does the YCBCR 422 8b not represent Dolby Vision 8 bit? It is def 4K, I guess the HDR part I'm not sure of, although the LG interprets it as such.

How do you get the menu on the top right? And does this show the true resolution as the Ultra upscales to 4K as far as I am aware. I have a C1 but the test channel says 4K not supported on the i-plate although it looks like 4K to me. I don't use their supplied HDMI cable between the tv and the Ultra though, I use a better Belkin HDMI 2.1 cable. What does your i-plate show?

On my CX, I tap the green button (above or below the Netflix button, depending on your remote) 3 or 4 times, and that "secret" menu pops up. I have a 48" C1 and it works on that too. The "4K not supported" on the iPlate is an information message that informs you if that message pops up on your main viewing screen (not the iPlate), then 4K is not supported on your installation. The Ultra will broadcast true 4K on selected channels - the special test channel 216 at the moment, then 2 special channels during the world cup, then a few select channels will be migrated to full 4K. Depending on the setup in your Ultra decoder settings, it will either upscale normal HD content to 4K, or you can output to the native resolution of the source and let your TV do any upscaling. More useful info here

Thanks for the tip will try later today and I understand the i-plate now, bit confusing

Reviving this thread because I picked up an Ultra for the World Cup in 4K - for what it's worth, the 4K UHD test broadcast (currently on #216) is rather impressive, and hopefully a sign of good things to come on the forthcoming 4K channels. Anyway, I also have an "always on" HDR issue - LG OLED - but have a somewhat unnecessary, somewhat fiddly, somewhat clumsy work-around. Unfortunately it means swapping out HDMI cables. I connected an old HDMI cable I had laying around (I suspect < HDMI 2.0) between the TV and the Ultra, which then defaults to a standard 1080i/P SDR picture (upscaled to 4K on the TV of course). If I need 4K UHD e.g. for the current 4K test broadcast, I swap the HDMI cable back to the HDMI 2.0 issued with the decoder. You could likely achieve the same with an HDMI splitter. Until there's an update to fix this - or more 4K broadcasts - this work-around will have to do for me. Once you see live 4K HDR sport, you unfortunately cannot unsee it.
Perhaps just get a hdmi 2.1 certified cable? The CX is HDMI 2.1 - could solve your issues?

Some feedback: I accessed the menu with the green button presses, also the HDMI test menu at channels with 11111. Both will say 2160p and hdr10 on every channel. You can set the resolution on the decoder and it will show that on both these methods as this is what the decoder outputs to the TV. I changed my 2.1 cable to the 2.0 supplied one and now the message on the i-plate is no more so there does seem to be a difference somehow. Picture quality looks the same to my eyes. I have my decoder set to auto on HDMI output but it gives 2160p hdr10 and 60 fps on every channel I tested. Only the 4K channel defaults to 50 fps. With the 11111 method it does shows a different resolution also to 2160p and that resolution is more on the 4K channel as opposed to the hd channels, so I am assuming here that it is now working correctly for me. Checked on 3A also to diagnose i-plate message but channel 216 does not exist on it.

For those with an Ultra and an LG OLED, stuck with forced HDR, here's another little hack that allows you to disable HDR via a hidden service menu (it over-rides some HDMI settings) There's def some colour-shifting and / or gamma shifting that may require you to make further adjustments afterwards, but could be another work-around if you don't want to swap HDMI cables. Ultimately, this seems like a simple software fix on Multichoice side. Which means it may only take another 10 years or so

Why are you guys so stuck on the idea of disabling hdr? Just curious as it is not something i found bothersome on the ultra

Personal preference I guess. I prefer watching content in HDR that's designed and filmed with HDR in mind (Netflix, Amazon and Apple do this with varying degrees of quality). Watching SDR content with fake HDR enabled, simply because there's an HDR function on the TV, creates an artificial, over-processed image with extremes of light and dark, blown out colours, runs the risk of burn-in, especially on logos... but some people prefer the HDR "look". I guess the frustration is not having the option in the Ultra to disable it. It shouldn't be enabled automatically. Even Netflix and the providers I mentioned, will ensure that only content filmed in HDR will engage the HDR function on your TV. Multichoice's decoder leaves it on for everything.

Got the Explora Ultra to replace an Explora 1 that served a solid 8.5 years.

- Channel 216 is the only 4K channel so far and it looks good. Big improvement. Hopefully more 4k content than football in the future.
- TV shows 2160p and HDR for all channels so some upscaling and forced HDR must be going on. Not worried as I have an LED TV which doesn't burn in like OLED.
- The other channels look a bit better too. Maybe because HDR looks more saturated, or the decoder upscaling works better than the old 1080i.
- More responsive. Remote is also lighter and the buttons feel good but no playlist button anymore (have to nav using home button).
- Having Netflix and other apps available on the remote is cool, especially for less techy (read : older) people who don't like source hopping to tv boxes or navigating tv menus etc.
- Having the ability to connect to 5GHz band Wifi is nice although the DSTV servers are slow anyway.

Hope for some Black Friday special on it.

Are you sure about the "playlist" button being missing? I have the new "home" button but there's a dedicated red playlist button in the 2nd row, just below the power button. On my remote at least...

I think there's a new remote for 2022. This is what mine looks like, says A10 on the back.

Two days into my Ultra experience and I'm also annoyed by this. The decoder is essentially a one channel showcase at the moment.

Yeah, I was in contact with their (excuse for a) support team on Twitter, and after about 30 messages - I kid you not - everything from "reboot the decoder", "check the signal strength", "change the audio options", "what exactly do you want to turn off"... I eventually made a stink on the DSTV FB page, and after a few days they acknowledged that it's something they "hope" to address in a future update. I wouldn't hold my breath.
