DStv HD capacity, channels, and plans

Yes monochoice please answer this. There are far better codecs out there to use that can significantly reduce the bandwidth requirements needed to broadcast shows.

More HD channels would be awesome. Although chances are like all the other changes they make they will bugger something else up.

I was very dismayed to see that they have now reduced all 4:3 content on DSTV to show in letterbox format.

Also if they allowed subscribers to choose what they wanted on there boquet, it would also eliminate this pointless argument about what channels to remove. Everyone is different and has their own taste in channels.

Perhaps they should start asking international broadcasters how to go about resolving this. It doesnt seem to be an issue in other countries.

Ag dude... can you read ! There is no point in blocking them if the real issue is that of bandwith ! Please man this is going round in circles !

And don't bring downloads in to this... I do download stuff but its hardly fair to say that its an option for everyone. It should never be the case that we are forced to download stuff when some one like DSTV could be giving us the content in the correct quality, at the right time and in the right order !

on extraview so that R500+R50 or something like that not very keen to fork out even more money for a crappy pvr and pay extra to have HD

I reckon we need a HD religious channel

what we really need though is widescreen SD channels, I can't go from watching SSHD to SS1 stretched/half screen cr@p

Changing the codec would mean new decoders for everyone.

HDPVR is the same monthly cost as dual view, and the R50 a month is worth it if you have a decent setup. I don't think DSTV is cheap - but for R50, I'm happier than I was.

It would be great if they offered access to just the HD channels as a bouquet for cheap - I'd go for just that and can the rest.

Sorry bud, not as simple as that.
The DStv SV decoder chipset supports MPEG2. No firmware upgrade is gonna change that.

Only HD's support DVB-S2, which is 8PSK modulation with MPEG4 compression. They will probably release a DVB-S2 capable single decoder soon, wait a few years till it's the norm, then change their broadcasting standards. That would be the right way to do it...
 
The satellite serving South African television watchers is quite full, MultiChoice said, so the addition of further HD channels in the near future is unlikely.

Work is currently underway to replace Intelsat 7, the satellite which currently delivers DStv to South African homes. Intelsat 7 is to be replaced by Intelsat 20. According to MultiChoice this will afford them much greater capacity for services such as HD channels.

MultiChoice estimates that the satellite should be launched in the last half of 2012.

Knowing the way things work here in SA, they'll release a DVB-S2 capable single decoder, wait a few years till it's the norm, change their broadcasting standards and then suddenly be told by the government to use some locally-designed standard instead and have to start all over again.

You're getting a bit excited there... I know they have some more space available, not a lot, but I'm sticking to my story. They were running test on 11090 H for a long time. It is off now, but they've got to have it available for the near future.
 
Pathetic, these guys are the #1 satelitte provider in Africa and they are making a boat load of cash because of lack of competitors...thats why NASPERS(owners) are buying internet firms in china and russia because of the excess cash from DStv yet the channels we receive here in Africa are syndicated/fake copies of the originals airing in europe/US/japan/china/S.Korea/Singapore/S.America/Canada etc...

In the developed countries you literally pay half of what DSTV charges plus at least 10+ HD channels(minimum!) these guys have millions of customers, tons of funds yet they give us BULL****, we dont even have HBO...no ShOWTIME? WHY? Because the fat cats dont want to pay license fees even though they have more than enough money to do.

Fuk...Africans, we have to stand up and say NO!
