Hi all

Is it possible to do a self-install for DSTV HD? How difficult is it and what is required.

I remember seeing a thread a few months ago but cant seem to find it now...:erm:

Cheers,

Cheers,

depends on what you have already, if you installing from scratch no dish its dificult (but not imposible) you need a sat finder . and need to position the lnb about 45 degree - the sat finder is not expensive i saw one at game for under R200
If you have a dish and single lnb already its prety easy.
mark where the old lnb was positionted (probaly aroun 45 degree angle) put you new twin (or satcr or quad lnb) ( i prefer twin o satcr as less cables from the dish) exactly where the old one was, good to test it now with your old decder if it picks up signal.
then run your new cables , if you used a twin LNB you will need a multi switch (spliter) so to cablews in and 4 cables out then the 4 out goes into you HD.

if you have the old SD pvr its evan easier.
just need to follow from multi swich :)

there are a few other options so it depends on what you hae curently and what you want i.e extra view and what decoders you have.

also there is the new hdpvr comming out that only neds 2 lnb cables.

yeh, by the looks of it, the new HD PVR can be swopped with one of my SD decoders in my xtraview setup. As I understand it, all I need is a RF splitter to split the lnb cable that goes into the SD decoder. Is this the case?

Here's my "self install' wiki...

1.) unpack 'coming soon' HD PVR decoder.
2.) inpack lnb splitter, i.e 1 -> 2
3.) Remove SD decoder
4.) put new 'coming soon' HD PVR in the place of the SD decoder
5.) Use the splitter to split the LNB cable from the dish into 2 LNB lines.
6.) Plug these two lines in the respective slots.
7.) transfer 'heartbeat' RF cable from SD decoder to the new 'coming soon' HD PVR
8.) Call mutlichoice to enable new decoder/or if you bought it at multichoice, switch on...

IS this a good 'self-install' guide?

seems like, what set up do you have currently 2 SD decoders?
also i would make the HD pvr the main decoder
and a multi switch not a spliter normal rf spliter wont work.

nice try but no :)
New HDPVR needs 2 LNB feeds, current single view SD decoder needs 1. So you need 3, even though the HDPVR will function with just one (wont be able to record)
But... you cant just split the 1 feed from your dish otherwise you will not receive certain channels, you will need a twin LNB+M/S, SatCR or Quad LNB

Ok, I've got the xtraview setup with 2, 1110 SD decoders and a twin LNB. So, two feeds from my dish.

So, ok, I can't do the RF splitter thing, so, I'm getting the multi-switch. I read in these forums that the new HD PVR takes two feeds....

SO....two feeds to new HD PVR, third feed goes to my old SD 1110 decoder in the bedroom...is this so?

If that is the case, then I'll only need to split the one feed that goes to one of my 1110 decoders...right...?

No, GET A 2 IN TO 4 milti seitch ( I dont think you get a 2 in to 3 or 1 into 2:) ) and put both cables from the LNB into it, 2 out will go to the HD and 1 goes into the 1110 for what ever reason the HD will need acess top both cables in the LNB.

I have a dish already with a SD decoder...the post was made purely b-coz of the "coming soon" HD PVR decoder thread I read earlier today. I will not be watching any TV in bedroom, therefore will only need to hookup the "coming soon" HD PVR decoder. The information mentioned above seems pretty easy, only thing is can I get all the equipment from a GAME/MAKRO/DIONWIRED/ZAKSPEED? If I can get all the equipment from one store it would be better...

Thanks for the replies:)

I thought HD needed at least two cables into the decoder to handle the bandwidth ?

Or even Ellies ie Dual LNB, extra cable, f connectors

yes you can get all the stuff you need at those places
I bought my stuff here http://www.zaktronics.co.za/ because they deliver in JNB for free :)

isie is correct
except for milti seitch, no idea what that is :D

Its soo easy

ok dont buy the game satfinder, they are crap. go get one from space with the sensor and the noise. that's much much better.

Then get yourself a splitter. You know that you can run 2x hd pvrs for about the same price as one? If you wana go that way, goto ellies and get a 2x8 splitter. install the dish yourself, with a ellies twin lnb, and run that to the splitter. you can run out just 4 cables from the splitter to the hd pvr. so 2x in from lnb, and 4x out to hd pvr. buy it seperate from ellies, the splitter and the cable or they will charge you more.

then plug it all into the decoder. make sure the power is unplugged and off you go. if you wana go extraview then get maybe a 2x6 if you dont wana buy a 2x8. and then run one cable to the second std decoder for the dish, and then run from the rf in on the hd pvr to the rf in on the second decoder. make sure the hd pvr the main and second is std and whalaa.

as easy peasy as that. i thought at first complex, but after helping 4 friends setup theirs, it's like a walk in the park.

ellies also has precut cables for you for the splitter to hd pvr. and their price well a lot cheaper than the all in one pack from game. so buy cables and splitter seperate hehehe.

You need a dual LNB and a Multi switch to split those 2 LNB cables into 4. And then Bob's your uncle.

ok, next question....I can't find the difference between a RF splitter and a multiswitch. What is the difference between the two?....does the latter have some signal BOOST or what....? I mean, its an RF cable that comes from the LNB...

in laymans terms an rf spliter just splits a signal in 2 and sends it on his way, a multi swich can decide which signals needs to go which reciever.
ithe rf can only keep sending the same signal no matter what, the switch will send the requred signal to the decoder that the decoder needs.
