I live in a 2 year old complex and each block shares a dish. How do I know if the dish is HD or SD? Complex manager thinks the dishes are HD but I don't want to spend R2k on an HD PVR only to find out that the dish is SD.

The only way to have HD, is if the dish has at least a twin LNB installation.
This basically means you require two cables from the dish via the LNB in order for an HD PVR to function correctly.
I doubt your complex has this set-up.
All you would need to do is change the LNB with at least a twin LNB and route the extra co-ax cable to your room.

it will not have HD capabilities guaranteed...the twin LNB is far more expensive...
So on top of your decoder price you can add another R2000 for twin LNB, installation, and some splitter they will install...they will also run another cable as explained above...

Twin LNB, dish, cabling and installation can be had for about R1500

And I believe you can't just add a splitter to a single LNB install for the HD PVR, stand to be corrected though.

R1500 is right but not including dish...if so post link for our friend as that is a bargain...but i think he has a dish already.
Right on the single LNB...you will need a dueal one...

when i spoke to the installer there was some way to run it off single LNB but that would render your HD and PVR functionalities useless.

Can be had here for R2,759 including all hardware (i.e. decoder too) and installation. Would however upgrade the dish to 90cm for HD as recommended by Multichoice.

They might have also installed a SatCR LNB which would make life easier but would probably have to either (a) climb the roof to check or (b) find out who the installer was.

You can read more on a psuedo solution here but you won't get PVR functionality although pausing live TV apparently does.

Small correction... you'll get partially borked PVR functionality. As long as you're not mixing watching and recording between horizontal and vertical channels everything's dandy.

That being said, I'd rather do it properly...

Find out who the installer is that looks after the block. He should be able to tell you. Multiswitch system with single cable to every unit, is mostly not HD ready. Multiswitch system with 2 cables to every unit is HD ready. IF converter system with single cable to every unit, is HD ready (with additional network settings on decoder)... Don't listen to any of the above suggestions about twin and SatCR LNB's, and obviously you cannot install your own dish (as suggested).

Ouch :) I know you the expert but was just following on from what drukkie started about installing a new dish

Ja ja. I was just saying... not attacking. Most communal systems run a Quattro LNB into some kind of distribution system. This distribution system is what makes it HD ready, or not. Also, if there is a communal system, the body corp will not allow you to put up a dish.

Where do you live DarkDenim?

@QT, correct I'm not allowed to put up my own dish or modify the existing one. I have 2 connectors on my wall socket labeled SAT1 & SAT2 and my SD decoder is currently connected to SAT1. Should I try connecting it to SAT2?

If the SD works on the SAT2 output, then you have 2 incoming satellite feeds. This means it is HD ready. Those two feeds can be treated like the feeds from a twin LNB, thus you can put a 2x4, 2x6 or 2x8 domestic multiswitch on it for HD and XtraView setups.

Thanks. Will feedback this evening.

You don't need a multiswitch for HD PVR 2P

Runs and hides in case he's wrong :D
