What [email protected] want to see which are the most popular channels and then take the most popular channels off the cheaper bouquets,thus forcing the grannies who watch animal planet on compact to upgrade to premium and pay a higher rate and removing that channel from the compact bouquet.

If they can deactivate a decoder/smartcard remotely, they can see what channel you're watching at any given time...

The Opening Ceremony that took place on the 11th June was broadcast on SuperSport3 from 14h00-15h00 and attracted 480,000 Digital viewers aged 4+

How the hell do they determine the age group? Their next statement release may say something like: ...oh, and if you didn't know, there's a small hidden camera in each decoder that they use to see how many people are watching, aged 4+ :p

They can tell what channel the decoder is set to, but they can't determine whether the tv is on or whether anyone is actually watching. We don't turn off the decoder when we turn off our tv's.
 
Your dish/lnb is not capable of broadcasting, merely receiving. When they deactivate your decoder, your decoder receives that deactivation info from the satellite. Can you imagine a R400 lnb able to transmit to a satellite?

There are probably using Nielson or some other rating agency to get population samples from certain areas.
 
telkomreallysux is correct, your satelite can only recieve a downstream. The satelite stream sends down all accounts information (including smartcard info) and your decoder recieves the data on account status, bouqet etc.

At this point, it is important to emphasize that personal or individual household viewing patterns will never be published, nor will personal information be released.

No, they deactivate your decoder remotely by broadcasting the code to every decoder out there, only yours respond. It's one-way.

How can they see what I'm watching?
 
If it requires a new 1110 decoder and a modem, there are bunch of people they won't know about. I would be interested to know what kind of algorithm they use to figure out if you actually watch a channel, or are just channel surfing, or in my case, fallen asleep.

Yes they can switch or card on and off upgrade your decoder etc. But when you want anything done you sms or phone them. NO information of what the TV is tuned to, what the decoder is tuned to what you had for dinner or what you are doing in bed is uploaded. It is impossiple. Sky in the UK do it but what they do is to access your decoder by a telephone line in the middle of the night which downloads your decoder tunings(?)for the last 24 hours. It cannot tell if your TV was on or if you was watching a terrestial channel or Freeview etc on another tuner/decoder
