Hey guys, I was wondering what I should expect to pay for the installation (Satellite, Cables, Labour etc). I am based in the southern suburbs in Cape Town, if that matters.

I am considering a self install, but if the labour portion of the cost is going to be small then I may as well have a professional do it.

Edit: The reason that I am asking is because I would like a ball park figure. So that I know if the quotes that I get next month are outrageous or not.

Thanks for the info. Hectic @ the R3000 for HD install.

I didn't realise that it would be that more expensive. I was estimating about R1500 or so for the dish and install. Maybe I should try and do a self install then :D

I would say buy the hardware yourself & get someone to put up & align the dish, and maybe run cables thru the roof if you not into that stuff
Dish R500 (try get a 90cm dish if you going HD)
LNB/multiswitch R600 to R900 depending on which option you choose
Cabling at about R3 a metre

Or look on Gumtree. There are plenty of guys doing the installs. See this link here

Tell them in advance you will only part with your $$$ after the channel has been switched on.

Well said, a friend of mine decided he wanted to save a couple of rand by getting one of the advertisers on gumtree to do his installation, which looked like a job done, got the decoder booted up, found a channel, the very next day, no signal - the guy didn't secure the cable from the lnb.

So if you want a good job done right the 1st time, rather get a reputable installer out, one that will guarantee their work too.

Acid, on that exact same note I had a reputable installer put in my dual LNB and when he was done the signal strength was 98% and quality wass 100%. 3 hours later there was no picture at all. Turns out he didn't tighten the LNB properly and it rotated out of allignment.

Yeah, but at least you could call them back to come sort it out, gumtree guys - good luck

its not rocket science... DIY

No it isn't at all, lord knows how many times, I've done this for family members, but if he's going the HD install route, it gets a bit tricky

Thanks for the advice guys.

I will most likely go DIY. Try it myself first and if I make a balls up call a gumtree oke. :D Worst case get a professional afterward, but I am sure that I won't need to.

Okay, I've been reading about self installs for a while now and have a few questions.

I am planning to get a quad LNB without a multiswitch. I heard that this install can be 'challenging'. What is hard about it? Is it tricky to get all of the cables to connect to the dish securely? Is it hard because running 4 cables mean I will have a thick line of cables from the dish to the decoder? I only have one TV, so I don't see the need for getting a multiswitch (and the extra expense).

Well from what I read there is a change of signal loss with the MS. Also the decoders were designed to control the LNB directly. Also it is cheaper

3 Things... (1) The switches are active and there is normally no loss or a slight gain. (2) The MS was designed to make the decoder think it is connected straight to the LNB. (3) It is not cheaper, as a twin + MS is cheaper than a quad.

The most expensive quad LNB is less than R500 at zaktronics, where as the MS alone are R300 - R450. So it will cost me more, or am I getting confused here?
