DSTV Installation

The most expensive quad LNB is less than R500 at zaktronics, where as the MS alone are R300 - R450. So it will cost me more, or am I getting confused here?

you have a few options when it comes to LNB's to choose from.

1- Quad LNB no multi swich requred but 4 cables from decoder to the LNB is hectic
2-Daul LNB multi swith requred so messy behind the TV and only 2 cables to the LNB
3-SATCR LNB no multi swich and if you only have 1 HD pvr decoder only 1 cable goes to the LNB if you going for extraview 2 cables to the LNB this is the neatest and least labour needed but the LNB is expesinve I think Zaks qouted me about something shy of R800 - this what im doing when i get paid the wife say she dont care if its more expesive she dont want too many wires :)

on the dual and quad LNB's and the Multi swithces you dont have to use Ellies parts there are generics out there that are cheaper and work just as well

Thanks, I will shop around this weekend. Then iff Macro still has their special at the end of the month I will go for it, else I will do a self install.

That pricing does not make sense. Anyway... looks like you are right, IF you buy from Zaktronics.

I will compare it to local shops and see what they quote me. I am not too concerned about wires since my TV is in a built in cupboard that nicely hides it from view :D

A twin LNB & multiswitch should be about the same price as a quad LNB, Multiswitch should cost you about R400
Its not difficult, its just extra cabling & trying to fit 4 cables through whichever holes they need to go thru.

If you might expand later & get another decoder to use Xtraview then I would say rather go the twin LNB + 2x6 MS option

btw, the signal loss thru a multiswitch is minimal. I am running 2x HDPVRs off a twin LNB & 2x8 MS, no problems

It's dead easy to install the MS. I did it myself this weekend, and zero issues at all

oh ya check out http://www.maelec.co.za they they other place i couldnt rember

Thanks.

Now, I am just going to hold thumbs that the special at Makro is valid till next Friday - cause that price is unbeatable. I worked out what an install is going to cost me and it is not likely that I can beat 1k. Even R1.5k for an install is about worth it, it seems. Hmmm.

doesnt look like any of the stores have stock that may work in you favour, go to a store and ask them if they have stock, then if you still in the sale period, insist on getting a rain cheque they are obligated to give you one (if they dont you put up one helva a figt), then as soon as they have stock they have to give you the product at the advetised price even if the price is gone up :)

I am currently only subscribed to the easy view package using the standard decoder. Can I connect the hd pvr to the existing connection and subscibe to the premium package without the hd access for now, and then only later add the hd access to the subscription and then add the additional lnb, cables..

Thanks.

Yeah, the premium package works with any decoder. Once you get your hd pvr, you can upgrade your equipment and everything will work as per normal.

Just to clarify. The premium package will work on the hd pvr without having to any existing premium package installation (only 1 lnb ...). Is this correct?

Not really, the HDPVR is not designed to work with 1 standard input, it wont boot up & scan with a single LNB. If you get a multiswitch you can fool it into booting up but you wont get program info & wont be able to record

With a Twin LNB running into a decent splitter, the decoder will pickup four inputs. If you use decent cable, it does not make a difference if you use a twin or quad LNB.

Coax cable can carry around 30Mb of traffic, HDTV is only 10MB.

The co-ax actually carries a lot more than 30Mb/s. On the vertical it carries 7 DSTV transponders, with quite a few channels on each transponder. That will equate to quite a bit more than 30Mb/s. The HD channel on it's own is running at around 10Mb/s.

Another thing. You cant use splitters to split the feeds from a twin LNB to 4. You need a multiswitch.

I got the equipment myself and did the installation on my own. Just got the wifey to help me with the alignment and it up and working within 30 minutes.

Doing the same today as well, I am just doing an LMB upgrade though. The installer wanted to charge me R1600 to upgrade to a quad LMB, I got everything I needed for R700 and i'm going to do it myself.
