Hi

So i upgraded to a HD-PVR a few months back. I did a self install with a dual lnb and multiswitch. Before the upgrade I had no issues. Now I cant seem to get good signal quality on some channels. I have 90%+ signal strength on all channels but 20% signal quality on some. I imagine those on low quality are all on the same polarization so I also imagine it's the LNB scew that is not quite right.

So I had the wife watch the info bar while i tried fine adjustments, but it never went above 20%. So is it possible the LNB is faulty or what do you think? I checked all the wiring and re-did some of the connectors from the multi switch.

Should i fork out the cash and have installers come have a look? I was also considering getting a SATCR LNB from spacetv for around R900. How much would a call out fee be to have the existing LNB/dish tuned in properly?

Cheers!

Have you tried to check the alignment at the dish outside? Sometimes alignment needs to be redone when you change the LNB

Well i didnt move the dish an inch when i swapped the LNB, and I think signal strength = dish and signal quality = lnb but i could be wrong

The angle of the LNB in it's bracket is critical too. You turn it, you lose signal. Each LNB is different and must be tuned. Just because the old LNB was at, say, 5 o'clock, doesn't necessarily mean the new one will work at the same position.

So getting them out to tune it would be the only option ?

Altech UEC aren't specific with their terminology because these terminals are made for the layman. An educated guess would be that signal strength would be the ratio of the current SNR to an ideal one (obviously capped to 1) whereas signal quality would be the bitrate afforded by the current modulation scheme chosen by the ACM algorithm (provided they are using DVB-S2 as DVB-S does not support ACM).

Huh? :wtf:

I would love to say, "Get the SatCR from Space TV!", but SatCR is only superior for certain applications. For most installs I would advise you stick with the good old twin LNB and multiswitch (just pay a bit more to get a quality switch, like Spaun). Don't ever trust the signal level and quality readings from any STB... Are you experiencing any digital break-up or missing channels/functionality? If not, just forget about it for now.

If there is a problem, it could be:

1. LNB skew, as mentioned.
2. Dish allignment.
3. Faulty LNB.
4. Bad cable or connections.
5. Obstruction in front of dish (trees?).
6. Faulty multiswitch.
7. Could even be a dodgy decoder.

I do have picture break-up but just on the one polarity, SSHD2 being one. Some channels have 20% and some have 80%+, so i imagine its a set of channels on the same polarity which have poor quality

SSHD2 is currently still on the same polarity (vertical) as most of the other channels... How is your MNet?

They are in the process of doing the switchover to DVB-S2 for the HD channels, but I do not know exactly when this will be finalised. A lot of people running HD decoders of 60cm dishes, will have issues with their HD channels when this happens. They will have to upgrade to bigger dishes.

MNET and MNETHD is fine along with most others. Two channels i have low signal quality that ive seen is SSHD2 and E entertainment. SSHD2 is almost never watchable but the other HD's are just fine

It is now carried on 11170 H with E!, Style and Crime. So you should have issues on all of those. What about the other horizontals like Animal Planet, FTV, BBC's etc?
