Dstv phasing out catch-up for older decoders

Took my decoder to care centre as thought something wrong with it as catch-up not working properly. Imagine my surprise to find out Dstv is phasing out the series that they put on catch-up on the older decoders - only the new explora not affected. We must apparently go to the website to watch catch-up shows BUT this is not updated either. And no information is forthcoming and doubt they will admit to this.
They should stop spending money on lavish office upgrades and ensure their software upgrades are compatible and functioning properly.

There is no truth whatsoever in this statement by the care centre. MC is NOT removing CU from the older PVRs. Even the SD PVR still provides for CU.

So it was probably a ploy by the care centre to try and get you to replace the decoder with an Explora, or it is a misunderstanding regarding the repair of the decoders on the irrepairable list.

Do you mind providing the detail of the care centre that provided you with this info?

That is pretty much my thoughts on this..

Was an overzealous care centre agent trying to upsell an Explora to maybe get commission or something.

I should have added though that the capacity available on the older decoders for CU content is less, so not all the shows that are on CU on the Explora are available on the older decoders. i.e. the CU schedule is different for the various model decoders.

The content for catchup ususally arrives a a couple of days later on the 2p. The explora gets it a couple of days earlier. This started happening after they launched the explora.

Do you work for Multichoice?

MC is doing everything they can to force people away from the SD PVR's, so it would not surprise me in the slightest.
The only time I will change, is when I cancel DSTV completely to watch only Hulu and Netflix. Hurry up FTTH!

It's probably because the tech is over ten years old and they are moving to satellites that the sd pvr doesn't support.
Also you'd expect them to support decoders indefinitely?

Yes. Yes I do. Especially when their "new improved" technology offers me less than I had before. I would like to watch 2, record 2 like I can now, without having to pay for 2 decoders and an expensive installation.
Don't tell me to spend money to get less.

MC is not actively encouraging us to keep our SD PVRs yes but they are not removing access to CU either.

The one single gripe I have is that should you try and replace your SD PVR with another one, is you cannot get a sw update to the latest sw level ( L78). This is a good and a bad thing , depending on what level the replacement SD PVR is on.

The decoder is over 10 years old but the technology it is based on is the same as the technology the new decoders are based on.
The SD PVR improved on the dual view technology by adding PVR facilities and allowing the dual view to be truly independent dual view.
The SD PVR decoder is not DVB-S2 capable and does not support HDMI. These technology changes are basically the ONLY technology improvements we have seen since the launch of the SD PVR. All the rest (larger HDDs, changes in the UI) are still possible on the SD PVR given the correct programming attention.

There is NO MC decoder that offers view 2 record 2. The only way you get that is with a combination of decoders. The SD PVR is a view 2 record 1, where the shared content is available to both viewing environments.

And Yes the single biggest gripe all of us with SD PVRs has is the fact that the moment we change and replace the SD PVR with any other decoder we end up with "Less" for the same money. And No, CU and BO do not make up for the loss of the view 2 capability.

The Explora is the only PVR decoder now available. The HD decoder is the new single view non PVR decoder. Both are DVB-S2 and -S capable decoders, whereas all the older single view decoders are DVB-S only. The older HD PVRs are DVB-S and DVB-S2 capable.

The SD PVR is not DVB-S2 capable.

YES THERE IS TRUTH TO THIS STATEMENT Dstv is phasing out the number of series available on catch-up - even the call centre and technical staff referred me to Dstv now (ie via internet) for programmes "missing" from catch-up. And no IT WAS NOT an overzealous agent. I too, do my homework and I too, have a lot of knowledge.

Which care centre stated this information? And which decoder are you referring to?

Dtsv has today again confirmed they are NOT doing what you claim.
