DSTV price increases coming?

Well well well... Some people like being ripped off..

I spent 10 years in the UK and had SKY and in that time i think it went up twice by a couple of pound...

my SKY for everything except Sports was £22 per month in 2000 today that same package is £26pm approx R300 or in real terms R150 per month as you earn much more in the UK

We also in 2007 received a SKY+ box (PVR in dstv) for FREE and FREE installation ... they tried to charge extra per month for the SKY+ but this was dropped after a couple of months as people complained...

Plus as a SKY customer you get 16mps uncapped ADSL and a phone line for £5 per month

Sky+ for £26 per month or R150 in reality
Free installation and FREE PVR or HD PVR plus £25 Woolworths voucher
http://www.sky.com/shop/tv/entertainment-extra/

Still feel yourself a fan of DSTV ?

Also if you take the full package of Sports and Movies for £55 per month or in reality R400

and you get all this

Still a Fan of rip off merchants ?

TIA

Don't compare SA to the UK. There are many things that are significantly more expensive here. For example, VDSL is ten times more expensive for half the speed. This thread is about a price increase and viable alternatives to a monopoly. Moving to the UK is not a viable alternative for most of us. Maybe for you.

You people don't think outside the box, I know what it is, you want it for free, right :-)

Wrong, I put DSTV into suspend mode last year (R20/mth to keep account active). The day they offer a premium bouquet at a sensible price without sports channels I might consider it but I doubt it as I'm very happy with my current "cable" channels

Wouldn't the reconnection fee be cheaper than your cumulative suspend fee?

Possibly but this way I can reactivate on line at the drop of a hat should DSTV come up with a "must see" - live coverage of aliens landing maybe :D

Oops I forgot, I can also watch SABC, ETV and some other dreck should I ever feel the need :erm:

That is not what I am getting at... what i am getting at is ARE WE BEING RIPPED OFF ? and the answer is a resounding YES!!!

MC and DSTV are outrageously expensive and all the sport freaks are just making this beast worse...

If all the sport freaks just unsubbed for a month or two then you'll see DSTV change it's tune.. but no they have to watch their rugby or cricket..

The thing is, guys like you are always comparing MC to services in first world countries with very large subscriber bases and most of them on a premium type service... Apples with apples please.

Typical South African attitude... this is why you are now one of the most expensive countries in the world... your food prices are more expensive than London, your petrol is going up and up and up, you satellite station is one of the most expensive in the world, the internet is rubbish slow and overpriced just because MP's want to keep milking the people .. yet nobody does anything.. you just say TIA.....speak to the DA... DO SOMETHING .. stop bending

your food prices are more expensive than London

Linky please?

http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=United+Kingdom&city=London
Milk (regular), 1 liter 1.00 £ 0.81 1.09
Loaf of Fresh White Bread (500g) 1.00 £ 0.84 1.25
Rice (1kg) 1.29 £ 1.15 2.50
Eggs (12) 2.39 £ 1.88 2.75
Local Cheese (1kg) 7.00 £ 5.59 8.00
Chicken Breasts (Boneless, Skinless), (1kg) 6.75 £ 5.00 9.00
Apples (1kg) 1.67 £ 1.50 2.00
Oranges (1kg) 1.60 £ 1.00 2.00
Tomato (1kg) 2.00 £ 2.00 2.00
Potato (1kg) 1.00 £ 0.93 1.50
Lettuce (1 head) 1.00 £ 0.80 1.00
Water (1.5 liter bottle) 1.00 £ 0.75 1.50
Bottle of Wine (Mid-Range) 7.00 £ 6.00 8.00
Domestic Beer (0.5 liter bottle) 1.50 £ 1.00 1.90

I'm sure some things are more expensive (DSTV for example), but not food.
Even luxuries...
Magnum mini sixes:
Tesco = £3.49, Pick n Pay = R45... that's the equivalent of R2 cheaper in SA.

500gm Corn Flakes
Tesco = £1.98, Pick n Pay = R22 - that's about R5 cheaper in SA.

Considering how far SA is from 'anywhere else', I'm surprised the UK is so expensive for food. Don't you feel ripped off? I'd rather be ripped off on luxuries thanks.

It is just the truth. I just commented that you cannot compare the subscription income of Sky to that of DStv. Sky has a lot more money to create channels and buy satellite bandwidth. Is this not true?

I had absolutely no "attitude" about DStv pricing.

Milk is £1.29x 13 = R16.77 for 2.2l here it is R16.99 for 2l
http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=254656399
Bread is .79p = R10.27 per sliced loaf Here it is £9.99
http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=254942066
Loin Lamb Chop x 4 = £4.00 = R52 or 2 for £7 Here they are around R70
http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=277005657
Pork Chops £2.20 = R28 here around R38
http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=256566911

The minimum wage in UK is £12000 per year or R156 000 per year or R13 000 per month and the average wage in the UK is approx £24 000 per year or R26 000 per month..

So food is much cheaper in the UK by FAR

So why are you here? Rhetorical question. Or maybe you're trolling?

This is not the UK so stop comparing the damn prices. Yes, DSTV is a massive rip-off but so are many many many many other things here. Comparing the price to somewhere like the UK is not going to make a damn difference other than piss people off more than they are already. As I previously said, This Is Africa. And to continue my previous example, internet access is so damn expensive here (mostly) because government is a majority shareholder in the monopolistic fixed line operator. And since the foolish and uneducated majority keep on voting for the current government, the situation is unlikely to change in the near future. Sure, there is massive investment from private business but I imagine it will be some time until we see prices reduced to anywhere near international levels (since those private companies need to recoup their investments and show profit to their shareholders). As far as pay TV is concerned, I would certainly be curious to know how many members of government have Naspers shares.

To analyse some of your comparisons:
- Milk almost the same price, R0.87/liter difference but that's because our cows see the sun.
- Where are you paying £9.99 (R135.50) for a sliced loaf in SA? Maybe a typo?
- Lamb/pork is more expensive, I'll give you that. Where did you get the SA prices? Woolworths? If I feel like it will go to see some local butchers and get more realistic prices.

Whoa

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=277181372

£14.55/kg = R197.35/kg. For SIRLOIN!!! Even woolworths isn't that expensive.

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=264305437

£5.30/kg = R72/kg. For pork sausages. R53.30/kg at pick n pay.

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=268728466

£7.55/kg = R102.41/kg. For bacon. R87.96/kg at pick n pay.

And the cherry.

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=277005657

£11.43/kg = R155/kg. For lamb loin chops. R127.99/kg at pick n pay.

When you live in the UK you are not a tourist spending Rands. you are spending Pounds that you earn... and even minimum wage is double the average salary in SA.... so in reality halve all those UK prices..

*sigh* This whole conversation was supposed to be about comparing SA DSTV prices to the rest of the world and how DSTV is a rip off... suddenly it turns into a typical SA chest beating exercise of how great you lot are... and how crap the UK is..

My point was SA is becoming far to expensive for what YOU EARN IN SA... the average salary is not R26 000 per month where as in the UK it is ..

The average salary in SA is R2 900 per month or for whities R9 700 so the average in UK is 8 x more.. so the fond should cost 8 x more but it doesn't .. it's only slightly more

So the food might be SLIGHTLY more expensive but you are earning a LOT more money so in reality it is cheaper..

And the same with DSTV.. but how dare I use Sky as a comparison... all the Saffers come rushing to defend their pariah on how great it is and how crap the UK is ... LOL

And no i am not trolling.. the truth is the truth

No, the conversation was about the increase in DSTV subscriptions. You bought the comparison with the UK into it. What the hell is the point in comparing South Africa to the United Kingdom? Yes, we are being ripped off but rubbing salt into the wound and punting how much better life is overseas is not going to make any South African feel better about being ripped off more than they are already. Hell, those of us that are properly employed contribute significantly to the national treasury income but what do we get for it? No decent security, no decent medical care, no decent transportation and no decent true public education. Over and above the taxes, we still pay for private security, private medical care, private transportation and private education.

Still think I'm beating my chest about how great we are? Oh, and nowhere did I say how crap the UK is. What I was doing is trying to point out how foolish it is to make these comparisons and how they don't lead to anything other than people getting pissed off. Usually I'm very civilized and am happy to participate in realistic debates but quite frankly this is the end of my participation in this thread. It's now degraded beyond anything I want to waste my time on. I have to go to work now so I can pay for my DSTV and lamb chops.

The only difference i see here between the Saffers and the Poms is that here in SA we have not competition, wether its Telkom, Eskom, Mutichoice DSTV, Banks, Cellphone providers, Tollgates etc. we getting raped left right and centre by our beloved cANCer guavamint who cannot give a rats ass about the country, but only their own agendas. with the anc in power, we will always be behind the rest of the world. Zille and De Lille might as well fight to make the WC a state on its own as the rest of the country is being wasted by uneducated morons.

Hi Sven, I don't feel ripped of at all.

> I spent 10 years in the UK and had SKY

I doesn't matter what happens in the rest of the world. We don't have that choice in SA. Not Multichoice's fault, governments fault.

> Still feel yourself a fan of DSTV ?

Absolutly, 100%.

You miss it Sven, I say all going on in SA and all that we have to pay, I say R23/R25 a day is nothing for DSTV. I mean, try comparing that to fuel cost, electricity cost, and gazillion more nonsense, where we have no choice.

I also see someone said DSTV is 90% trash. I beg to differ, I say DSTV has some very high quality stuff. In fact, they have so much, I can't watch all I want to watch, just on DSTV.

Someone complains about repeats. They are no problem for me.

Another one complains about the long add breaks. No problem, get PVR and forward over it.

People will complain even if DSTV is free, and no matter what it costs. People will always just see the negative, and not the positive. I say to all, if you don't like it, stop you subscription, no problem, you don't want it, so don't subscribe to it.

But, make no mistake, I hope for competition for DSTV as well. TopTV had the chance of a lifetime, and they squandered their chance.

Some people seem to really hate the fact that others have more than they do.

I guess we can completely derail this thread by arguing why 2/3-play toilet paper is worth the expense over 1-ply and/or newspaper.
