Old thread or not... Has this question been answered? Don't want to create a new thread to re-ask it. What's the USB for? Anyone gotten into the hard drive's pants?
Normally, if you record from a dstv decoder to a Windows 7 PC, PlayReady flags the detected copy protection. This will only allow you to watch the recorded content on that PC and thats it. You can copy it to other PC's /devices but you can only watch the recording on the original PC. However, there is a device that... PM for details.

On new HD PVR models each Hard Drive is married to the actual board of the PVR, and then the smart card is married to the decoder too. In order to decode the drive contents all three must match up, Board, drive & smartcard... So its even more impossible to copy and decode. My suggestion is to not even waste your time trying... But as vinodh says, there is a device that will strip the copyright protection from the output of a PVR, but its means you would have to copy in real time ... tedious!
Does the SD PVR not use FAT32? How about the HD PVR?
Anybody got a sample file they can upload for people to look at?
All these manufacturers use some standard forms of encoding. I recall looking at some clips before (different manufacturer) that one was able to decode with a bit of pt.

Have not bothered stuffing around with the HD PVR. From sources in Altech; told me that if your HD PVR drive packs up, its a mission to fix, and can only be done inhouse. As for the SD PVR its is 3 fat32 partitions and you can do your own HD change if you want. I have a thread out with instruction on how to do so, with a SATA converter..

Long and the short is that all DSTV programs are encrypted and copying it to a PC will not work.
If you want to record movies or series, you need to do it from your PC using MC's PC software as well as screen capturing software. Nothing else will work.
